Multiple File Opening

Inv is/has an MDI, multiple display interface, eg. you can have one instance of Inv
open and multiple files open within that one instance.

Inv comes with the functions Save All & Close All.

But you try opening more than one file at a time ! ! !

It should be possible with the File Open dialogue to use window select, Ctrl+select
or Shift+select to open multiple files in one go.

The best I can do at the moment is use Win Explorer - or Search - and drag them
into Inv.

I assume this is because earlier versions of Inv would have crashed if too many
files were opened, but Inv's performance seems better now.

Oh I have wanted this for years.

And you wouldn't think it would take a programmer more than say 1 hour
to fix this??

Has a technical reason ever been given for this shortcoming ?? I don't care about a speed issue. With AutoCAD, I'll open 20-25 drawings at a time by CRTL+A and when I hit "Open", I walk away for a few minutes. I'd do the same with Inventor...

I also use that function ALL the time in Autocad

Duncan,
You cannot multi-select files on File-Open dialog in R11 but you can open
multiple files by drag&dropping file to "locations" area (see attached image).

..which is nice, but you still have to open them one by one instead of multiselecting, hitting open and go fetch a cup of fresh (well) coffee.

I for one always use explorer.

All that does is basically open up the "file open dialog" right after it
opens the first part. Then you have to select the next part....and so
on...etc

Not really a very good solution.

Go on ... tell us you're going to put it on a database somewhere.

I suppose if everybody who signs up for the beta requests it - or reports it as a
bug - we might get a solution.

Gents,

Make sure that you sign up and check out the beta for our next release as
Sam Antos pointed out in an earlier post.
Hint, hint, wink, wink.

Thanks!

Please tell me that you also adopted the nice way Autocad highlights the
displayed document as a default when opening. It can save a lot of
navigating.

Also, is there any chance of getting the preview to show when saving. I
know this sounds like an odd request, but sometimes I want to start from
scratch and overwrite an existing file. It would be reassuring to see
the thumbnail and verify that I've remembered the file name. The memory
just isn't what it used to be (and it didn't start out all that well).

In VB it takes about 7 characters of code to change a file open dialog into
a multiselect dialog. I can't imagine it takes much more than that in the
programming language they use.

But IMO they need to create their own file open dialog and get the "Options"
out from under a button and out in the open.

Richard,
Thank you for those inputs.
I think both are nice enhancements. Pre-selecting last used file
in the file open dialog was logged as wish - DID 856131,
preview image on save dialog was logged as wish DID 856136.
Best,

And while we are at it...

I would like to see the files sorted "By Type" as a default 🙂

I think we should be allowed to choose.

I'd like to sort them by relationship. For example, a sub-assembly and then all of
the components within that sub. But that is just my preference.

You'd almost have to use Vault to add that option, or it would take 12 minutes to open the file window.

Oh c'mon Duncan, they can't even get BASIC numeric sorting right. Look
at the current release. Its still has areas where it doesn't even sort
in a logical order....ie the "attach balloon from list" dialog.

You actually think they can get something like *that* to work right?

I mean it sounds wonderful, but just not realistic
