motion through a set distance?

is there a way to set the distance that a part may move through? i am still working on the hoist assembly from one of my other posts, the chambers in the assembly are constrained about their z axis so that they can collapse into each other and extend. along with this, i need for the chambers to stop at certain distances to keep them from pulling apart while in motion. at the moment, when the top longitudinal rotates along the pivot, the hoist assembly follows its path, but at a certain point where the assembly should stop moving, the hoist pulls apart and the longitudinal continues along its path. i would like to constrain the entire assembly to an angle for the longitudinal and the coinciding distance on the hoist. thanks, tj

Look at using a transitions constraint with a surface...

im running version 10 and it does not allow the transition like the one in the tutorial. if anyone could tell me another way to go about this, ide appreciate it.
