Modifying Library Parts

I have a jam nut and need a copy of the same nut with a left hand thread.
Both nuts are in the Project Folder but I can't edit the threads to make
them left handed. How do you convert a library part to an individual,
editable part?

Two ways:

1) Move it out of the library path edit it then put it back or,
2) Make a project that points to the library paths as workspace or
workgroup paths

Wait a second I just reread your question. You mean a content library part?
You don't. Insert a new one from the content library with the correct hand
threads. If it doesn't have left hand threads then I'd seriously start
looking at iParts...

You'll still want to read my first post and keep it in the old memory banks

Isn't there a way to just drop the Library part from the file and move along
as though I had just drawn it?

I assume we are talking about Inventor content library parts. They are
constructed using a different method that normal parts. I have not found a
way to edit them. Seriously.. look at iParts...

I think if all you're looking for is a static part then you can copy the
iPart factory that you get jam nuts from into your project folder. Then open
the file and turn the ipart factory into the part you want. Then delete the
table that makes the part an iPart Factory and that will turn it into a
"static" part. Then you can go in and edit the description of the thread.
Save, close, and insert.

I've seriously considered finding someone to hack the content library files
for me. Maybe come up with a little utility that would turn off whatever
"can't touch that" switch they have on them. It would be nice to have them
available as a resource for creating new parts.

Jay,

I ran into a similar problem and was advised to copy the file into a file
folder that was not designated as a library file folder.

Apparently IV does not let one modify part factories if they reside in a
file folder that is a library file folder.

Hope this helps.

While this is true of normal parts (and iparts) this does not allow you to
edit IV Content parts. As Walt stated they are magically protected by a
force field that prevents editing... (I'm looking Walt)

Well, I took the coward's wa out. I renamed the file so that it showed up in
the Parts List twice and then I edited the parts list. Hardly the proper
solution but there was a line forming for the drawing. I hope to fix it once
I learn all about iParts...
