Mid point valid for dimensioning

I have been told and shown on an different PC that a mid point of a line is a valid point to dimension something from. however on my PC i cant get it to work. Is this part of an add on program that make midpoint valid for dimensioning, or do i just need to change a setting in my inventor?

I think you've been misled. You cannot DIRECTLY dimension to the midpoint of a line. You CAN directly use a line midpoint as a constraint selection, or you can drop a sketch point or hole center on a line midpoint and dimension to that.

in the IDW place a sketch on the line you want to dim to the center

then dimension to that.

I have done this a ouple of times.

Sorry i mean in a sketch, when dimensioning up i was show dimensioning from a mid point of a line. I have always done it before by drawing a little line in from the mid point perpendicular to the line u are wanting to dimension from, but this was definately from the green midpoint.

I think maybe he was showing us with Inventor 8. there are loads of little things he showed us that i just cant find.

I can get ordinate dims to dim to midpoints, but
that's it. Other wise I have to use the sketch technique if I want to use
anything else besides ordinate dimensions.

The best way to accomplish this is to place a sketch point at the
midpoint, The sketch point is constrained to the midpointm allowing the
dimension to be placed. There is no possibility of selecting the
midpoint of a sketch line for dimensioning without the point. It works
the same way in an IDW.
