We have installed Autodesk Product Design Suite Premium 2012 on 3 new computers with Windows 7 64bit and MS Office 2010. We prepare our worksheets in excel and link the drawing numbers to the drawing file (idw and dwg) with hyperlinks.
By clicking on the hyperlink if the drawing is an Autocad dwg it will open in Autocad and idw will open in inventor. Untill now (we had Vista 64 with office 2007 and Inv 2011) it worked very well. With our current setup (Win 7 64 & MS Office 2010) dwg opens in Autocad instantly, but idw takes a long time and brings up a dialog box saying "Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action" and on clicking OK it will take the same amount of time to bring up the "Opening xxxxx\xxxx.idw" warning. On clicking OK it opens the idw. Is there anything we can do to remove this time delay and warning messages?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Both warning came from Microsoft Office. The delay may be attributed to the new way Inventor files are now loading. Features for a idw/dwg don’t load till a idw/dwg is opened. This is different from past releases Inventor 2011 and lower. In past cases the idw/dwg add-ins loaded when starting Inventor. Now it takes the opening a idw/dwg to load the add-ins.
Try opening a blank or template idw/dwg first then the file with the linked Excel file.
Another thing to look at with a slow responds is your virus software. If you don’t download files from the internet on a continues basis. You may want to exclude the Inventor extension from constant virus scans. Most virus software allow for file extension exclusion.
Thank you mercerc,
This problem started with our new setup (Inventor 2012 & MSOffice 2010 on Win 7 64bit).
With Inventor 2011 & MSOffice 2007 on vista 64, AutoCAD dwgs opened instantly and Inventor idws always shows the safety warning. On clicking OK it will open the file as if it is opened from the File Open Dialog.
Now we have to find the part number (which is the drawing name, an 8 digit number) then navigate to its folder and open the file. We have AutoCAD and inventor files in same folders with 8 digit drawing name and sometimes same drawing in AutoCAD (old version - needed for reference) and inventor idw (new version).
In previous setup it took us only a few seconds to open an idw (excel shows the warning message immediately and the time taken to open file depends on the file size) now takes about 3 minutes to show the OLE message then about the same to show up the Hyperlink warning message and then the file opens. If cancel on the first warning message and click on the Hyperlink again OLE warning will be shown multiple times and then the hyperlink warning.
Our productivity is severely affected and what ever may be the solution, it has to be addressed as soon as possible. Please.
We tried with freshly started Inventor and after opening a few file and templates. It does not change the time it takes to open from Hyperlink. If the file is already open, on clicking the Hyperlink, it brings the idw to front instantly.
we are facing exactly the same problem (klicking on hyperlinks in excel) and above mentioned advices not help.
We have installed Inventor 2012 and in Excel 2003 and 2007 (both), the excel is stacked for few minutes with the result of the message. We use Win XP.
To Open Inventor prior hypertext link with idw/ipt will not help. Iam files has the same problem.
Only no problem is with opening of step files, these are opened instantly.
If we use association of idw with Inventor 2011 version, there is no problem. It seems the problem only with 2012 version.
I will appreciatte any advice/help.
Yes the problem is with Inventor 2012 product line. Even if the Hyperlink to Inventor file is inside an Autocad 2012 dwg, when clicking (ctrl+LMBC) it takes forever to open the Inventor file even if Inventor is running.
Could someone from Autodesk please tell us if the issue is being investigated/ being fixed/ will be fixed on a future release etc.?
Also please refer Drawings-opened-with-Hyperlink-gives-errors-and-wo
It looks like Implementation of Hyperlinks in 2012 product line is broken.
We reported this to our reseller Karelcad. They logged this with Autodesk and finally gave us a solution.
I am posting it here for the benefit others.
Please try the workaround to add
an environment variable Name: DYNAMIC_LOAD_APPLETS Value: 0 to make Inventor load all applets on start up.
I have tested and you still get the virus message however no other dialogues open and Inventor opens straight away.
To add an environment variable go to windows Start button, right click on Computer and go to Properties. NExt click on the Advanced system settings on the left, in the advanced tab click on Environment Variables. Click the New button at the bottom of the screen under system variables. add the Variable name as DYNAMIC_LOAD_APPLETS and the value as 0.
Thank you for the info. It really helps !!! Super.
In meantime I realized, that if I use excel macro to open the file (associated with a hotkey), instead of simple clicking on hypertext link, it works also imediatelly.
However, your advice is great and functional, thank you very much.
