MDT6/ADT33 INV6 to 3dsmax 5

This ones a real cracker.

I natively model with Inv Series 6, and can easily get my INV models into
3dsmax and VIZ via the INV importers. I also use Autodesk MDT6/ADT3.3 for
certain clients who deliver their models using these apps. Now heres the
catch.

I am using all the Autodesk flagship apps so I am now within one companies
boundries.
I cannot for the love of money get MDT/ADT models into Max with out loosing
data.
This is because these apps use the arx programs and the native DWG importers
into MAX/VIZ do not support this. However the DWG File link manager within
ViZ does support arx, and creates what is called VizBlocks in side Viz. I
prefer to use Max as it supports spacewarps, particles, Video post and has
much better animation controllers than Viz, as Viz is somewhat stripped
down.

The problem is to get an MDT/ADT model into Max. I have to use Viz. first
via the DWG File link manager. Then I need to export out of VIZ in Dwg
format a new DWG (NOTE Not a Max file) as this collapses the arx app data
chunks and converts the VizBlocks to regular DWG layers.

Now I can import this 2nd gen dwg into Max. All this data translating seams
riduclas.

Autodesk have for Max what is called the design Extensions and only
available to Max subscription users. These exts allow Max to do what Viz can
Do.

I dont have this subscription as it works the same as the INV subscription
and the Max life cycle is 18 months on average which means another 12 months
to go, before upgrading and getting the subscription.

Does anyone have a better way to do this, or is there another utility out
there. I have been in contact with the Autodesk ABC and I am still waiting.
Any help now will be appreciated.

Sorry if this post is not directly INV related but the problems I am having
seem to be a mixed bag betwwen apps. I know we have talented technical
ideas out there in this forum and MDT is part of the INV Series.

Thanks in advance

Colin

Colin,

This does not directly answer your question,
but...

I recieve MDT models that I bring into 3ds max
all the time. I first STEP the model out of MDT, STEP into inventor, then import
the Inventor data to 3ds max. Sound like a pain, but in my experience 3ds max
handles data from IV much better... it seems much more lightweight that a direct
MDT import, also it comes in more accurately. Worth the extra step (no pun
:) in my opinion.

As you mentioned, the Design Extension gives you the file-link capability
but to subscription customers only.

Alternatively, if you have both Autodesk VIZ 4 and 3ds MAX 5 installed on
the same machine you can use the "VizCopyTool" utility to get some of the
functionality of VIZ into MAX (including DWG FileLinking) and it is free
(this utility was a precursor to the Design Extension).

Download the utility for MAX5 here:
ftp://ftp1.discreet.com/web/support/3dstudio/vizcopytool5.exe

Readme: ftp://ftp1.discreet.com/web/support/3dstudio/vizcopytool.htm

Installation guide:
http://discussion.discreet.com/3dsmax/Doc_Source/vizcopytoolinstall.htm

When you read the documentation, it will refer to using Max 4.2/4.3 - ignore
this. This documentation was written before MAX5 and never got updated.

Thanks Ryan

I knew there had to be a solution. I have installed it and it works. My only
concern now is it was written for Max4 and repaces some dlls. It did not
backup all the dlls it claims to back up and will this cause me grief later
down the line as I am on Max 5.1.

Maybe Autodesk can throw in its 2 cents here

Thanks again

Colin

Actually the setup files that I directed you to were for Max5 (the filename
remember was "VizCopyTool5.exe") - It was only the documentation that was
for Max4. You installed the correct version based on your copy of Max (V5).
Discreet also makes available a Max4 version of the setup files which
doesn't apply to you. You shouldn't have any problems with incompatible
DLL's and such because all the files that were installed/overwritten were
compiled for Max5.

Correction.. it is also for Max 5. I hope it does not cause 5.1 too many
problems.
Forgive me complaining here, but this is frustrating.

The exts should readily be availble for Max users, as we paid double the
price of Viz, and we should not be muscled by Autodesk because they are
trying to get more from us. What would have been the case, if i did not also
own Viz . Autodesk would be sitting pretty with my $3g and I would be
sitting with a problem, while there was a solution readily available. I
thinks its rediculas I have to own 2 products to do 1 job. I had my
Discreet And Autodesk dealers standing on their heads with this one trying,
to get over the bureaucrats at Autodesk.

Anyway for now I have a solution. Thanks again

Colin

Yep Just what I thought

Max 51 crashes when using Filelink manager. Now I cannot restore my system
as the back up files were not created with the Utilty, so I guess I am back
to square 1. I have to uninstall and reinstall Max 5

Thanks for the help Ryan. I am much obliged. I can only hope someone at
Autodesk is monitoring this.
