MDT2004 parts not translating to IV7

I have been designing new assemblies with Inventor since March. I have a new
project coming up that will require using old assemblies done in MDT. I
don't want to simply "import" using a proxy. I want real models that I can
work with.

I have tried to translate MDT2004 parts and assemblies into Inventor always
with the same poor result. I choose to "open" a .dwg file. I then go through
the couple of options windows that pop up and "finish". I have tried all of
the translation options for model/layout etc. All I ever get is a
standard.idw window with a poor or no view of my model with grab points to
rotate move and stretch it. I never get a .ipt or .iam file to open. One
thing that might be a clue is I always get a pop up window just before the
.idw window opens that says "Mechanical Desktop 4 Service Pack 3 or newer is
required" I have to click OK to continue. Is that normal? Is it something in
my registry? I have searched the newsgroups and not found anything that
helps me on this subject.

I look forward to your answers and I can't wait to see my assemblies come up
in Inventor. There has to be a way...

Cindy

Not sure if this will be of much help but this is something that was posted for helping IV recognize MDT. The following registry entries on your system should look like the following:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion7.0\Translators\DWG] "CombineOn"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion7.0\Translators\DWG\Inserting Into Sketch] "Inserting Into Sketch"="FALSE"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion7.0\Translators\DWG\Last INI file] "Last Export DWG INI file"="Configuration Not Saved"

I suspect some dll needs registered but I have no idea what it is. I would reinstally IV7. You might look at this though:

Man, I thought that was going to be it! dwg
translator was NOT loaded. It IS now though and everything operates as
hopelessly as before. I tried opening with and without MTD open etc...No
Luck.

What does the Add-In Manager show. Is the DWG translator
loaded?

Interesting...I wonder why it is looking for such
an old version? Guess it's time for reistall. Do I just use windows
uninstall then delete directories or do I have to go deeper and delete other
stuff? Is there somewhere in the registry I have to touch, I hate doing that.
Will this take care of a dll problem?

Thanks, Cindy

I'd look at what mechman wrote. If that doesn't help I would uninstall IV and delete the install directory. If you made custom threads, stored your icode in the install directory, kept your templates there or anything of that nature you will lose it so you might want to backup your install directory.

Next I would delete the regkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion7.0 (after backing it up of course). You will lose your custom settings like where project shortcuts are stored, ifeatures, username if you changed that etc. This step is probably not necessary but increases your chance of sucess.

Now reinstall IV7 and SP1 and I would expect everthing to be rosey.

Well, I made the registry changes and it made no
difference.

Then I uninstalled Inventor 7, deleted the program folder,
deleted the Registry Version 7.0 Key. I reinstalled IV7 and the translation
function still does not work. It does exactly the same thing as usual including
the pop up about using MDT version 4 etc.

I did not uninstall the Inventor DSS Monitor or MDT 2004,
should I have?

I don't know where to turn next.

HELP!? 😞

Thanks,

I just noticed that after I reistalled IV7 the add-ins
that I had downloaded (from Sean's site) and installed in the previous
install are loaded again. I thought I would have a clean new install of IV7.
Where are the instructions to load the add-ins stored? Apparently in a place I
did not delete. I am not saying that the add-ins are the problem, just that I
missed deleting something somewhere so the translation problems I am having did
not get fixed.

I have reread all the relavant Discussion Group topics and
anything I could find on the Autodesk site. Does Voloview play a part in
translations (I read something in the AutoCad support site about
that)?

I am at a loss again and I think I have tried everything
you guys have suggested.

Thanks, Cindy

Most of us are now including a uninstall.bat file with our addins. If
you look in the install directory (usually in a sub folder of C:\Program
Files\Autodesk\Macros) you will probably find one.

For your testing purposes though, I would just run the addin manager and
unload all addins that you don't need.

Hi Kent,
It's not that I don't want the add-ins, it's the fact that they were still
loaded in IV when I did a completely NEW reinstall. How did they get there?
I am concerned that there is some secret area on my drive that I need to pay
attention to when I do an unistall to try to solve the translation problem I
am having. Apparently just uninstalling IV and deleting the program
directory and the Inventor Version 7 section of the Registry doesn't cut it.
Where else should I be looking?

Thanks, Cindy

Addin's won't be removed when you uninstall Inventor. I am sure it is
more complicated than this, but when Inventor loads it looks at a
certain part of the registry and if there is any DLL files that are
registered as Inventor addins then it loads them.

I really don't think the addins are part of the problem.

I hate to say it but if I was in your shoes I would probably remove both
Inventor and MDT, Remove the directory's, run the reg cleaner
Powertools from http://www.jv16.org/ and then reinstall MDT and
Inventor.

the only thing I could find in the support Knowledgebase was this

Am glad you made the suggestion Kent. I was about to.

Once she had done the complete uninstall and the registry stuff with
RegClean I would also suggest she use Windows Explorer Tools - Folder
Options - View - Show Hiden Files and Folders.

Go through all of the areas of her personal Document and Settings Folder for
any left over AutoCad or AutoDesk folders. Get rid of those also.

I have had to do this on ocassion with VoloView 3 folders that did not ALL
go away and caused me trouble on re-installs and setups. I know this is not
the same levvel of software that Inventor is but it may be a possibility.

Shouldn't she also be looking for any Common or Shared folders that may be
getting left behind ? This was my original thought when it appears Inventor
was seeing somehting from MDT4 ?

Sorry to refer to Cindy all through this as she, but I am directing my
comments to you Kent, since you are more familiar with Inventor by a long
shot than I am at this time.

cindy,
In addition to Kent's and Tim's recommendations, there is a
"Registry and Files Cleanup" utility for Acad2004, located on the
Autodesk Support site. If you decide to remove 2004, it's probably worth
finding and using. Why no such thing exists for Inventor? I just don't
understand.
If you go this route, I would remove anything even remotely
associated with ADesk. VVE, MDT2004, Inventor, any Object Enablers and
anything else you might have from Autodesk.

I had a similar problem Cindy.

I had to do this to resolve it.....

Remove ALL AutoDesk
products,.even viewers etc

Edit registry to remove all AutoDesk strings with
reg cleaner

Re install

It didn't fix my problem the first time I
uninstalled until I uninstalled all AutoDesk products and edited the
registry.

Hope you solve it

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply. That's what the experts are
telling me to do but I wanted to sleep on it before I jumped in and "destroyed"
my system. I have watched the newsgroups for months and often read of people
having to go as far as wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows...I always
pitied them. I never thought this "little" problem would get so BIG. I had my
AutoDesk products just like I like them, everything was zinging
along...until now.

Thanks for the affirmation of the fix. I will do it but
I'm NOT HAPPY. I can't even remember all the AutoDesk stuff I have updated and
added over the years. I hope I can get it back to where I like it.

I'll post back here when I get it working.

Thanks again Everybody,

Cindy

Were these MDT models created in an older version of MDT? If so, then
you will need to migrate them to 2004 for consistent results anyway.
This might help.

I uninstalled everything to do with Autodesk and cleaned
out the registry and settings of all references to Autodesk. I almost did
too good a job because I lost the links to the news groups in Outlook
Express and had to reinstall those.

MDT2004 and IV 7 are reinstalled with service packs. The
translation from MDT to IV7 .iam and .ipt works like a charm
now.

Thanks All!

Cindy

Does this mean you are SOOOOOOO good at this

All joking aside, glad you are back in business and
working like you want, I shouldn't say much since I was real late getting into

i have seen installation order affect inventor,
specificly if i install mdt first, inv seems to lose the serial number, which
makes it rather hard to run as an authorized version.

i'm not sure if this will have any bearings on your
issue, but it's possible a compnent did not get installed correctly if inv
wasn't installed first

Installation order doesn't seem to have any influence on
translating MDT2004 to Inv. 7 on my machine.

Do you have the latest Service Packs for both MDT and Inv.
7?

I just translated a MDT2004 assy into Inv. 7 with no problem
at all. I  basically accepted all of the defaults in all dialog boxes.
See the .ZIP file I have placed in Inv. Cust. Files of screenshots of all the
dialogs and my choices. If possible, can you post your MDT file ZIPped, in
Inv. Cust. Files. Maybe we can see if we are able to translate it or
not.
