Library parts, can not edit

Some of our library parts were drawn before I got here and I am finding out
the some of them need edited. When I go to edit the parts, I can't. I have
to copy to a new location remove from the library then save copy as. Do I
have to do this process every time? Is there a way around it? Thank

No, there are several ways to handle this situation. If you search the NG
on this topic you will find the various ways others, including myself are
approaching this. With R6 Inventor began treating library paths as
read-only. Try searching on "library parts" or "read-only".

You can't edit parts which are called up from your 'project library search path'. To edit library parts I have set up a project called LIBRARY which calls up the library file under 'workgroup search paths', which then allows me to edit at will.
Hope this helps
