Knurley Problem!

I have sent jpg copies to the CF to show this problem. This is a copy of
the body of that post:

Infectious spread of knurl in presentation (ipn) file. Notice how the
knurled surface spreads to the entire endcap in the presentation drawing!
BUG? A separate extruded surface had been created for the knurled texture,
and constrained to the base cylinder in the "Probecap Knurled Assy", so only
that surface would have the knurl. What went wrong? Is this a known issue?

Please see the attached files in CF. Thanks.

Mark

What version are you running? R6 has face colors so a separate surface is no
longer required.

Are you using the default colour in the one part file to place the knurl?
If so it can confuse the IPN about what colour is default. Try a different
colour for the knurl.

Oh - I see what you mean - after knurling the entire piece, I can change the
color of the other surfaces away from the knurl. Kind of reverse thinking.
Thank you kindly!!

No. Keep the default colour the default. Create a new colour for the
knurl. Apply that to the surface that you need.

The knurl is not a color, it's a texture. I don't think it can be added to
one surface the way you describe. Try it on a cylindrical face and let me
know. Thanks.

Yes it can. Textures are a subset of colors. You assign a texture *to* a
color. Then apply that color to the face...

Sean's right. You had to assign a texture to a colour to get it onto your
part anyway.

Sorry Sean - did I miss this in one of your tutorials? How do you assign a
texture to a color? Apparently I'm overlooking something here!

Go to format/colors, find the white color and click New. This makes a copy
of white. Rename it to what you want (knurled) and then click on the
textures tab. Assign the texture and save. Now apply the knurl color.

I understand how to apply texture as a subset of color using the format
menu. I don't understand, however, how to apply a texture to a specific
surface after applying the default material and color to the part. Can you
or Sean give me a "blow-by-blow" procedure? Thanks!

Mark

Thank you Sean!!! Once again, you're a life saver (or close to it )!
Is this documented anywhere in the help files?

Mark did you see my last post above...

you apply the color (which has a texture assigned) by selecting the face of
the cylinder and RMB/properties

No problem. The whole color/texture/materials things is a bit confusing. I
think I address it a bit in my colors and materials in iParts tutorial (but
it was written before textures) I have no idea if it's documented or not.
