IV no more...

After using IV for 6 months now, our parent company has decided to use Solid Edge instead. Does anyone know what is in store for us using Solid Edge?? good or bad.

6 months?  I hope there were external factors
because that's really not long enough to become fully acquainted with the
software.  Sorry for your loss <f>

Think that's bad? I had a potential customer who bought IV5 a year ago (no VIP/AIS), I trained them in IV, they let it sit on the shelf for a year, they finally brought it out, started a pilot project with it and then trashed IV5 for SWX after only a month of using IV5. They refused to upgrade to R5.3 or R6 and then SWX offered them an IV5 for SXW 2003 trade (SWX training not included). How fair is that? My understanding is that the switch came down from Mgmt. Some of the real users were a bit perplexed.

I wish you luck.  I have only seen demos, but
IMO you will regret having to live with the results of their decision.  For
your sake, I hope I am wrong.

By the way, what version of IV did you use for 6
months?  I started 18 months ago with R4 (followed with R5, 5.3, and 6) and
despite occasional expletives, have never wanted to change.   I had
used Pro/E for many years and SolidWorks for a short time.  Solid Edge and
Unigraphics never seemed to be top choices to me.

Good luck.

That's an understandable change to me. We use our models for machining and
recently purchased IV series because of the promised features of IV6. Well,
we know what happened there. If sp1 doesn't make the software productive we
will also change to something else, in spite of the fact that our experience
lies with AutoDesk. It's about dollars and so far this software is costing
me dollars instead of making me dollars.

We use 5.3 at present and will upgrade to 6 when SP1 is available. The decision has come from the top, and wasn't due to problems we had with IV. Saying that we would like a lot more performance on large assembly .idw's.

FWIW, R6 large IDW performance has increased greatly from my tests.

Can't comment on SE.

I have played with solid edge for a bit. Found it too to be fine but still preffer IV for our needs. Has descent tutorials and talks politley with Unigraphics. The free, unlimited demo doubles handsomely as a viewer and can be installed on any number of machines. I would recommend it to anyone that deals with a lot of Uni users.

IMHO

Out of curiousity, that parent company isn't Delphi, is it? We are being told to send them SE format drawings and models. Kinda sucks.

just to pt my two cents in solid edge and large assemblies do not go together they handle about 1000 to 1500 parts fine after that good look you will have plenty of breaks to talk about how nice inventor would be
