IV closes to desktop when constraining

Inventor does a complete close when I try to use any constraint command in
an assembly.
I just did a repair re-install to fix a previous problem and now I have this
new problem. Is there a fix to this??
Thanks

Josh

this was happening to me this morning on a sheet metal part. total pita! what i did, was "save as" the part. deleted the original, then re-inserted the one with the different name. for some crazy reason it worked. worth a try for you. lemme know if it works. -Joe

That suggestion you had for me didn't change the
outcome for me.  I still get the complete close to desktop...

This really stinks!!!

sorry josh. how are you doing on hard drive space? have you cleaned your temp directory? try those 2 things too. and since this problem just started to arise.....i'm assuming you are NOT using an ATI video card, right? -Joe

If it's not something related to a specific part (?) and problems appeared
after the "repair" I'd consider a clean-out and fresh install.

Hard drive space is good.  Temp directory is
clean.  And I wouldn't touch an ATI with a ten foot pole!!

I've got an NVidia 750XGL.

Pre sp1 I experienced this a couple of times in the same assembly when constraining between 2 parts. I resolved it by moving one of the parts to another location then constraining it. All this while working in XP Pro, I would get the usual "...Inventor Error Message...", hit "don't send", then Hello desktop. Post sp1 I have some occaisional "constraint lockups", if I let it sit (0% cpu usage while waiting) Inventor will return. If I don't let it sit and try to pick something to re-initialize it, I go straight to desktop, no message. Mike

....just one additional thought. In some previous release I remember having
problems with a combination of adaptivity and the constraint preview (Gloria
III). If you normally (I do) run with the preview turned off, doing the
repair probably reset it to on.

Could try nuking the current user section of the registry pertaining to IV. Sometimes that helps although I haven't had to resort to that since R4.

If you don't know exactly what I'm talking about DON'T DO IT!

Jeff,
I had one assembly that would cause a crash on my notebook, but not on my
workstation. Just tried it with preview OFF - and it worked. Hmmm.

I just uninstalled and re-installed IV 7 Without
Sp1.
this time and did performed the same constraint as
earlier, this time it worked no closing of IV.  There must be
something in Sp1. that my computer doesn't like.

Re-install SP1 and try it, it may have been related to your original R7
installation.

I posted this problem dated 6/06 in this NG but I still am not sure what
caused it, although it's gone now.

Yeah, it's strange stuff. I guess it indicates there is a conflict of some
sort, but it's really hard to pin some of this stuff down. I've just gotten
in the habit of keeping two things off; constraint preview in IV and autosave
in MDT. I'm a bit odd and consider both to be an annoyance for the biggest
part, anyway. 8~)

Good morning, (so far)
I just re-installed Sp1. and all seems "normal". I did test adding a couple
of constraints to my assembly and had no problems even while using the
preview.
Thanks to everyone that helped me out, much appreciated..
