iParts for begineers

I have done well almost the "Introduction to iParts" of Sean's. I get to the
excel sheet and I am stumped. Firstly there is a mention of the bore
dictating the length? I understand the logic in this but there is no
mention of the connection till now? You are not told to equate between them.
I have one row completed which is taken from the model? How do I fill in
other rows? I do understand that if bore is stated and length connected by
equation then the rest of the sizes will follow if equated.
My problem is that there does not appear to be any equations in the excel
sheet so how can you fill in the sheet without filling and calculating every
cell? When I did place a size in a cell to see the result, I saved the sheet
and on returning to model which gave me a error box which was off the page
empty cells blaa etc. Problem was that the box with the OK button was off
the page and you could not proceed at all so its task manager :smileysad:(
I have a basic knowledge of excel, understanding the connections of
equations
but not advanced enough for either or blaa. Sorry for a question on basic
iPart theory but this is where I am meant to start? And I would of thought I
could make it through an intro at least. TIA

The columns are created by the table maker. First you create the feature.
Then go to the parameter list and change the names to something that makes
sense. Then go to the table maker and pick from the parameters that was
just created.

You are not told to equate between them.

To fill in other rows-- logically. If you have a parameter called
"diameter" and the forgoing value is 1.25 the next one under could be 1.5 or
.75 or whatever makes sense.

If you have created an equation in your parameter table to dictate the
diameter from above. Something like "diameter" has a value of d12*0.75.
You can stick those equation into the parameter table to get another value
that can be used in your excel sheet even though it is not shown. It can be
shown. Normally you format your excel sheet to shown no in or mm after each
value. If you insert an equation like diameter*0.75 , there has to be a in
or mm after the "diameter".

I can't seem to find the original thread for this but Laurence I'd be
interested what part of the tutorial you found confusing. If it is indeed
confusing I'd like to rewrite it. Feel free to email me directly with your
comments/concerns...

sheet...." and it appears by magic but the sheet doesn't seem to exist any
where? So I downloaded file bearing from CBliss web site to see if I could
clear things up. I suppose to understand how it all works I need to know
where the excel sheet comes in to play, this is where in the tutorial where
it is explained how to fill out sheet I come to a dead end. I have posted my
file in CF so you can look and maybe I have missed some thing fundamental?
If the model has parameters which are linked by equations to each other and
the excel sheet is meant to be a copy of the parameters list but the excel
sheet contains no equations then were do you fill in extra rows for
different model sizes? The whole idea of equation linked parameters is so
you don't have to work out all the dimensions, so filling in the sheet seems
backwards to me anyway that's where I am at stuck. My model gives errors
when you try to edit sheet this is where there is a problem no doubt.
Meanwhile I will go over the tutorial again to see what I have missed .

Laurance. When you RMB on the table and choose edit table and the fancy
Inventor table thing comes up you are really just getting a pretty cover
on Excel. When you right click on it and select edit via spreadsheet, you
are getting the same thing, which is a sort of special embedded table that
doesn't show up in the normal embedded folder.

Your table as it sits has a couple of columns that have no value iParts
don't like that and will complain. That is the errors you are seeing. Just
say ok and edit it.

So Right click on the table and choose to edit in in Excel
Make sure every cell in Row2 that has a column title in Row 1 has value a
value
To make more sizes, add the values to Row3 ~ as many rows as you need. Keep
in mind each cell needs a value. For instance if you have 10 columns and 6
rows, every cell in that 10x 6 area needs some value If every cell in a
column ends up being the same value then there is little reason to leave it
in the table. For instance if the material is common in all the bushings,
and they are all the same color then don't add Display style and Material
columns.
