iPart with visible sketch...or surfaces...

Is it possible to create an iPart which would show its sketches?
Or is it possible to create an iPart which only contains surfaces?

I can get neither one to work. iParts don't show any sketches, and even
surfaces don't show up!

Any ideas?

I am working on a solution to this
problem...(http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?threadID=185998)

I want to create some sort of iSketch (an iPart with only a sketch)

So far, no luck 😞

You can make an iPart showing the sketch if you create it in an iam with the
Create Component command.

Yes, but I want to be able to extrude my profile.

As soon as I have placed the iPart, the sketch becomes invisible.

Aha, you have placed the iPart Factory into the sub-assembly!

My setup however is just a little different:

1) I don't have an Extrusion, my Custom iPart consists of only one sketch
(so no features!)
2) I want to place a member of my Custom iPart into an assembly (the user
must save the custom ipart child into his/her workspace)

But thanks for your example!

Isn't that where we were before? You can just have the sketch, but one of
your previous post said you wanted to extrude it. You can just have the
sketch then in-place edit to extrude if you like. ... Then again ... maybe
I'm missing something ... again! .

You created an extrusion in your iPart Factory, I don't want that! 🙂

I want to insert my custom iPart into an assembly --> I choose which row I
want to have --> I give the custom iPart a name (so it will be saved in my
workspace) --> Inventor places the custom iPart into the assembly.

At this stage, the sketch becomes invisible (the sketch is NOT derived into
the iPart).

I need to have this sketch visible, so I can extrude the profile in this
iPart child.

Is it any clearer??? 🙂

Teun, did you try the "iMate trick"? If you add an iMate to a sketch
geometry of the sketch of interest, that sketch should get derived into the
iPart child. This should work with anything including surfaces.

Thanks a million Udaya, the iMate trick did it!

Check the end-result (zip file).

The only thing: I have now created a "FakeBeamLength" so I get a custom

This structural shape is just an example (Josh Petitt was trying to link the
length of his custom iPart to derived parameter).

What do you mean with "dash numbers"? Can't you include the dash number in

Dash numbers go on parts made from purchased parts/stock (extruded shapes,
etc.) that get modified and consequently become ours. They get dash numbers
(-001, -003, -005... for parts or -101, -103, -105... for assemblies) so
there's no way to tell what the next dash number would be for a particular
part/assembly. Could change it in the table, but the templates work pretty
well as they are. I have generic cut-sketches, MIL-Specs, Finish-Specs and
Material call-outs included in the templates as well as the Tierney
reference for aluminum and CAGE CODES as required, so I can just set the
extents length, angle of the cuts and dash number then save the part with
the dash number in the file name. Not a workflow I have a problem with ...
it's the parts list I have a problem with.

Teun, did you try the "iMate trick"? If you add an iMate to a sketch
geometry of the sketch of interest, that sketch should get derived into the
iPart child. This should work with anything including surfaces.

Is it possible to create an iPart which would show its sketches?
Or is
it possible to create an iPart which only contains surfaces?

I can get neither one to work. iParts don't show any sketches, and even
surfaces don't show up!

Any ideas?

I see...

Give it some time...someday you will find a solution for your "dash
number-partslists-workflow-problem"

Or perhaps iCenter can help you? (It handles automatic partnumber creation
for example)

This structural shape is just an example (Josh Petitt was trying to link the
length of his custom iPart to derived parameter).

What do you mean with "dash numbers"? Can't you include the dash number in
the iPart table?

Ah ... structural shapes is what you're doing. I normally use templates for
those because they get dash numbers.

Thanks a million Udaya, the iMate trick did it!

Check the end-result (zip file).

The only thing: I have now created a "FakeBeamLength" so I get a custom
iPart. Is there another way?

Cheers,

Hello,

I have similar issue. The different is I will be using the sketch in using design accelerator. I have not way of selecting the pitch diameter if the sketch did not show up. I even tried extrude it using surface and that did not work neither. It will give fault value if I choose the OD.  For example, I have a basic chain setup with 180SP40 and 180SP15 (both are existing sprockets). After choosing the correct chain style from the table and start choosing the existing sprockets (OD of the tooth),it gave me a fault output and recognize the 180SP40 as a 42 tooth sprocket and 180SP15 as a 17 tooth sprocket. Any suggestion?
