iPart Save Bug

iPart Save Bug

OK one last time. This has been a bug for some users since R4. Others
never see it. Tom Sturtevant has been patiently working with me (thanks
Tom) on this for some time now. Basically, whenever you insert an iPart
into an assembly you are asked to save the factory. See CF for a screen
shot of the message. This is not new to R6. Additionally, if you have an
ipart in your assembly when you hit save it again asks you to save the ipart
factory. This is a never ending process as it asks EVERY time you save.
Quite annoying. (this part is new for R6). This should obviously not
happen.

The strange thing is that only a select few lucky users (groan) get to see
this message. Tom and I have exhausted all ideas on my setup and I hope
that someone else is seeing this as well so we can compare setups to maybe
find a common link. I know a few of you had this issue back in 5.3 but I
don't recall who it was.

Thanks,

I had that problem but then after I migrate all the iParts, everything is
fine. Just got to remember that the library is read only...I am not sure if
that is what you are talking about?

No different problem. You will see this if you don't migrate (you are
correct) but 1) I had them migrated and 2) this has been happening since
R4. I complained about it since R4 but it was only one extra click and I
didn't really mind. It just that the extra save is now pushing the limits
of my patience.

Sean,

I believe I have this same problem. I do not yet have R6 deployed but would be happy to help in any
way that I can.

We see it with users who don't have write access to the iparts directories but are continually asked to save
the members (and the factory at times) even though the members already existed prior to their insertion. I
spent alot of time personally making each member to get around the write-access issue, but we still get
polled to save each time.

Thanks Joe.  Yes it does create problems with
read-only directories but even with non protected directories the problem
exists.  I will be forwarding your info to Tom @ Autodesk and he'll be in
contact with both of us.

That's the same thing, that I saw here. I didn't feel
comfortable with a certain user's capabilities, so I didn't see any reason for
her to add to the iParts directory, and reccommended the IT dept. not give write
access. I will try to recreate that scenario and see what happens.

Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem yet? I am trying to create library of iparts on our server, but I want the factories to be read only. Unfortunately, Inventor is always wanting to save back to factory after an insert.

Thanks,
Steve

nope not yet.  It's been in there since
R4.  Only affects some people.  Can you do me a favor and give me a
run down of your system.

OS and what service packs

what other apps are running at the time IV
is

are the factories located on a network
drive

are the children located on a network
drive

are your other files on a network
drive

what permissions do you have on these
directories

post your project file

etc...

I am hopefully having an AE come look at it in
person week after next.

Hi Sean,
Thanks for the quick response. (I should also thank you for the excellent tutorials on your site.) We are currently running Windows NT SP 4.00. Nothing else running except for Inventor. I guess I should mention we are running Inventor 5.3, not 6 (this is the only place I could find where this problem was addressed). The factories and the children are both on a network drive (also running NT). The assembly is on my local drive. I have full read/write capabilites on all drives, but other users will only have read capability. I will post the project file shortly.
Thanks,
Steve
