Inventor Studio animate light

Does anyone know if it is possible to animate a lightsource in Inventor Studio?
I have tried the "animate component", but it doesn't seem possible pick/attach lightsources...

Do you mean, so that the light moves, or that the light turns on/off?

I was planning to move a light simultaneously with the camera in order to create a "camera flashbulb look", but I'm also interested in turning light on/off.

For release 10 & 11 you cannot animate light movement. It is most certainly
on the list of things we want to do.

Bill, when are we going to get nested lights? This is all that is needed because you can animate the location of a sub-assembly.

We REALLY need nested lighting (i.e. lighting defined in a sub-assembly can be propogated up into top-level assembly). We design furniture and store fixtures and the lighting is a very important aspect of the design. We use the same light fixtures and bulbs over and over, but it is a MAJOR hassle to put 10 lights in the top level assembly to represent mini track lighting. It would be very nice to define the light location/properties for a particular light fixture once, then those properties can be used in a top-level assembly.

Thanks for your answer Bill.
A thing for the wish-list would be to have an option to the "camera" to include a "flashbulb" to it. (I've seen this in Microstations image rendering module)

We're well aware of the need Josh..., thanks for adding your voice to the
throng. Not sure when it will happen.

Are you looking for a burst of light at a specific time?

IMO lights animation needs to cover

1) Animation of intensity / colour (i.e lights fading in or out, switching
on/off or changing colour like a 3 colour led)

2) Animation of position of lights... So a spotlight could rotate round to
highlight objects.

Regards

Rory

In addition to animating light...
- Color
- Intensity
- Position (all aspects)
- On/Off

I would like to see:
- standardized luminence values (lumens, candela, etc.)
- predefined settings for incandescent, flourescent, etc.
- assignment of these values/settings to objects - so I could make lighted
objects
- simulate vehicle interior & display lighting

You get the picture...

Bill,

I am looking for exactly this. I want to show a light strobing for a camera. Can I do this in 2008? I don't have it installed yet and it says nothing in the "What's New" literature.

If I can do this in 2008, I may just have to move up my install time.

Inventor Studio 2008 does not yet support animation of lighting. It remains
on the list of enhancements. While I haven't tried it, I wonder if you could
"model" a physical strobe by placing a rotating aperature between a spot
light and your primary object of focus?

What about nested lighting? Is it supported with '08

Great idea Gary. Maybe instead of rotating ,(angles are no fun) how about using a shutter so to speak. I picture a box or lamp shade with a front panel and set the panel to instant fade off and instant fade on? Naturally there would need to be a slight duration between. Seems like it should work, but I haven't had a chance to knock together a
test scenario.

I think I would try the angle idea first - I don't think for this particular use that a driven angle constraint should be an issue.

Probably not. My only other concern with the turning apature is there could be a sweep of light/shadows across the scene. I guess if it's fast enough you won't see it.
I haven't tried it so it's all speculation

I just built a mechanical strobe in a "room" focused on a piece part.

Works just fine...

I'll post my clunky render - proof of concept in a bit.

I created a "light box" with a revolving plate "aperature" and I modified
the lighting style by adding a light which I placed at a point "inside" the
box that was targeted at the part. I turned off the other lights in the
style (so the animation is pretty dark until the light is projected on the
object).

I only did three revolutions over a thirty second period - to verify that
conceptually this works.

You'd likely want other lighting in play and I suspect that you'd want a
higher "strobe" rate.
