DWL is the extension for a locked drawing file in AutoCAD. It sounds
like that file got moved to your desktop and might be sitting on top of
your IV icon. Try moving it to the side and see if IV icon is
underneath. Check the properties of the DWL icon to find out where the
file is located. If I remember correctly, if you try to open the
original file, it will open in read only mode because of the lock file.
If you delete the DWL file you should be able to open the original in
the edit mode.
Was there a proxy message screen when you tried to open the file? If so
it was not created in vanilla AutoCAD and it could be a third party
addon that is causing the problems.

When I got back, I noticed that the Inventor icon had been replaced with a file that had the same name as the troublesome ACAD file, but with a file extension of "dwl". Does anyone out there have any clue as to what took place here? I'm stymied!
