Inventor freezes up everytime it is used.

Hello all, thanks in advance for any help.

I work for a public school district that has a set of CADD classes. I have a lab that Inventor just refuses to work in. You can start the software but as soon as you try to open a new or previously worked on project the software just locks up. I've tried all of the normal things but nothing seems to help. I've run the repair tool, attempted to start the software from the true executable and not the short cut. I've removed and updated the .Net Framework. All of this has gotten me no where sadly.

I will admit the computers are underpowered for this type of software but its not so bad that it should never work. Here are the stats:

CPU: Intel Core 2 6400 2.13ghz
RAM: 2 GBs DDR2
Windows XP SP3
Video: ATI FireGL V3400

Not sure what else would be needed, just ask if you need another piece of hardware.

We run the Autodesk Design Academy 2010, it is the educational version through Project Lead The Way. The disk reads as AutoCAD Inventor Professional Suite 2010. I have tried installing SP1 and SP2, both still cause the same problems to occur.

We don't have registration on the server, it is done locally on the machine so it's not the computer losing it's connection to the server.

We run McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7.* as our anti-virus software. If there are any other pieces of software that could possibly cause an issue please let me know and I can list out what is on the machines.

Thats all I can think you would need for a little help. If you need more information please ask. Thank you again for the help in advance.

[Sorry about the false post]

I'm not sure about that ATI Card. Apparently you can still get them, but
the datasheet I found on the V3400 was dated 2006. Older ATI cards had a
real problem with Inventor. It's not that way anymore, but back in the day,
the joke was that ATI stood for "Always Trashes Inventor". So the video
card (with it's paltry 128mb of video ram) is suspect. Add an borderline
amount of system RAM, and a machine that may be running a very old and
cluttered up install of the operating system. Finally, was the AV software
disabled when Inventor was installed? If not, that can cause problems. Any
one of those things, or a combination of them, might be causing Inventor to
decide not to play.

I know how educational funding is, so I may be talking impossibilities here,
but if I had that machine and wanted it to run inventor, I'd check out the
video card's specs carefully. If it doesn't meet requirements, the good
news is that just about any modern $75 gaming card will run Inventor these
days. I'd spring for a couple more gigs of ram, and then wipe the hard
drive and install everything fresh. I expect that would do it.

Cheers,
Walt

Another thing to check is to log into that machine as an admin and see if the problem persists.. Inventor requires all users to be "power user" or higher.

Thank you for the quick response, I appreciate it.

We are in the process of looking how to replace the video cards, we had never heard of any problems with those older video cards but it explains why our computers with newer video cards don't have the same issues.

I appreciate the install steps too, we will try them since I don't think we follow all those rules to a T so to speak.

I just installed the educational version of AutoDesk Inventor 2013 today.  I have Windows 7 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM, IntelCore i7 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series Graphics card.

Yet - every time I open my assembly drawings from school, if I try to pan from side to side or up to down, even the slightest movement of the file, my entire computer freezes up, mouse won't move, cntrl+alt+del doesn't work, and I have to manually reboot.

Any suggestions?  I am updating my graphics driver as we speak.
