Inventor 6 and Norton (Symantec) Software Conflict

Anyone else had any problems with the combination of Inventor 6 and Norton's
anti-virus software?

If Inventor is started with Norton's Auto-Protect enabled, Inventor takes
forever to load and the hard drive continually spins wildly. Near as I can
tell, the offending process is Symantec's ccApp.exe. If I disable Norton's
Auto-Protect, Inventor is happy.

I never had a problem with Norton software and any other app--including
Inventor 5.3--until now.

It gives me the creeps to be connected to the network and the 'net with
Outlook running and have to turn off my virus protection.

Any thoughts?

For any virus scanner, I always exclude the Inventor data files, just to
keep performance reasonable.

We do have a known conflict with the licensing software used in the
international version of Inventor and the corporate version of Norton,
V7.61.xxx on windows XP.
For some reason WinLogon starts taking 100% of all available CPU cycles.

For now, configure Norton to not scan files. It is still running, just not
doing anything.
I can not promise anything, but the issue is being addressed. Stay tuned.

I have seen this from a couple of different people here on the group. I
would love to see a responce from Autodesk.

I've heard of a lot of folks having problems with Norton's stuff but I've
personally not had any problems until now.

What are you using for virus protection?

I use McAfee at home and have used Grisoft's AVG (free version) before with
no problems. I think their site is

Well to give my emphatic opinion...I LOATH
Symantec's software.   Years ago I thought it was the best.  I do
not even like it on NON-AutoDesk systems...We a have an IT guy who does not KNOW
squat about CAD and swears that Norton utilities are the greatest.  So I
would suggest you may have to PROVE to him that there is a
conflict.

It's going to be a big problem for a lot of folks
since Norton is so popular.  I don't relish the idea of having to get rid
of Norton's software since I paid cold hard cash for it.  My question
is...what's different about IV6 that it has problems co-existing.

I excluded the entire inventor directory and all Inventor file extensions
from NAV. It seems to help.

We run Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition and Windows 2000. The only thing
I did was stop the NAV service on my machine before installing V6.
Restarted service after. No problems at all. Of course this only works if
you've got administrative rights on your machine (needed for installation
anyway on Win2K).

Randy,
I don't run antivirus software. Plain and simple.
However, I don't use OE for my email. I use Eudora. I know enough to not
open certain attachments - when they come in, I open my file manager and
delete the files.

Haven't been bitten yet. Well, I should qualify that... About 8 years ago
I got a virus from a floppy disk I received from a client. Nothing harmful
but they paid for my time to rid my system of it.

I DO however download and run Norton AntiVirus a couple times a year just to
scan my hard drives and see what's going on.

Randy -

We use Norton internally and are required to update the *.dat's two to
three times per week.

John-

It's not only limited to that environment!

I run Windows 2000 Pro and Norton Antivirus and if Auto Protect is enabled
all process crawl from the time I open Inventor. Once I close Inventor is
when WinLogon jumps to 100%. The only way to fix it is to disable auto
protect of the Norton Antivirus software.

This is unacceptable.

Hi Randall,

I am experiencing exactly the same problem on a DELL Precision M50 I am configuring, running MS Windows XP Pro SP1, Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional and Autodesk Inventor Series 5.3. In my part of Australia the local VAR hasn't delivered IS6 yet, but I think I shall wait until SP1 to arrive before coverting..., anyway I digress...

The question that I have for you (and any other affected user of IS5.3 or IS6) is, does your product use the C-Dilla software licensing system in conjunction with this product?

I have found (as you and others have) that disabling the Norton Anti-virus Autoprotect feature will allow the products contained in the Inventor Series to operate normally. I have yet to fully test the time limits (if any) of this apparent workaround. If I fail to disable this virus protection app' by turning off Auto-protect in the Windows Taskbar, then launching ANY application that is part of the Inventor Series package (i.e. Autocad, Autocad Mechanical, Autodesk Mechanical Desktop or Inventor) will cause winlogon.exe to monopolize CPU cycles and the hard disc continually. The applications will load but they take what seems like an eternity to do this. When they finally load there is just no processing bandwidth left to effectively use the software. Shutting down whatever Autodesk app' I have started does not cause this problem to cease. The machine perpetually runs slowly because of this persistent problem, consequently affecting any other program from running normally - whether this be a Windows OS feature or Microsoft or third-party Windows-based program. I have to shut everything down and reboot to eliminate this problem.

Of particular interest to me was that I could repeat the same system failure by lauching only the C-Dilla standalone "portable licensing ultility" which is integrated into the international versions of the Autodesk Inventor Series (without using the Autodesk IS applications!). Users of 3D StudioMAX 5 have reported a similar problem and this Autodesk product is also software locked using C-Dilla. (Refer to the Discreet website for more on this matter). Their problem is apparently related to various Enterprise versions of Norton Anti-virus.

I have run all the available patches for the C-Dilla licensing program, currently at version 3.25.010 with no success in eradicating this problem. Refer to the Autodesk product Knowledge base under RTS 324010 and RTS 325010 for more information on C-Dilla patches.

On launching the C-Dilla portable licensing utility shortcut within the Inventor Series Program Group it reports the following information:-

Portable Licensing Utility Version 1.33
Language Version 9.9

The only way I can confirm that the patches offered for C-Dilla have installed was to initiate the add/remove programs applet within Windows Control Panel. This returned the following information about the C-Dilla License Manager:-

Version 1.01.00

LMS Version 3.25.010

I conclude that the license manager is sucessfully patched to the latest version available as of 5 November 02.

I have looked into the c-dilla.com and macrovision.com websites for info on this problem and a fix but there is nothing that I can find so far....

I have logged this problem with Symantec at their support website, but as of earlier today I have seen no additional feedback to this post of any benefit, though they have acknowledged the post (FYI - refer to for my post at:-

http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/displayArticle.cgi?group=symantec.support.winxp.nortonantivirus2003pro.general&article=<1021005074225.6032102531@servicenews.symantec.com>&product=nav&mini_version=nav2003_pro&tpre=sg

I have the DELL M50 notebook loaded with all the office and engineering applications I commonly use (I suppose I'm addicted to the convenience and flexibility that portability provides) and none of these programs conflict with Nortons like the C-Dilla managed Autodesk products do!!

I had previously been running IS5.3 on a DELL Inspiron 5000e notebook with Win 2K Pro and Norton SystemWorks 2001 Pro with no such conflicts.

Love Nortons or hate it, it has saved me from infection by Email attachments more than once, so I really would like to see a fix to this problem ASAP.

Despite the results of my digging so far, I don't profess to know the specific nature of the problem or a definite repair. Just hoping that my experience may help others in better identifying the nature of their compatibility issues.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows more about this issue or any possible permanent software patches or upgrades that will allow all these applications to co-exist efficiently.

Just to add my 0.02, Sound Blaster Live Update is another process killer with Inventor on Win2k.
The latest version that ships with the 5in1 cards seems better, but I've only tried that on XP.
