Inventor 2013 is running so slow that it's mostly useless

Inventor 2013 is running so slow that it's basically worthless. I have tried all the advice in the forums and nothing has worked so far.

The only thing different about the requirements is the NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 graphics card instead of the Direct3D 10. The other people in my office have the same set up and theirs works fine.

Hello drewstall,

could you please post a system profile and the installed Nvidia Driver Version?

Sounds like a driver issue to me for I have been working on a quadro fx 3800

and it mostly worked fine. Apart from that I´m hopefully right when I assume you

are running same sized files as your colleagues do?

Kind regards

Daniel

You say yours is the same configuration as the others in the office... but theirs work and yours does not.  So clearly there is a difference.

Try posting some useful diagnostic data that we can work with:  Run Inventor, start a part file, Tools > Application Options > Hardware > Diagnose... Press OK (to copy the results to the clipboard) then come back here and past it into a response.  There may be a clue here for someone.

The quickest item to check would be in the Application Options>Hardware and see if the setting is either Performance or Quality setting within Inventor.

I have seen installs for some reason get set to Compatibility which will slow down Inventor.

Even though the 390's came out in 2006, I would think this machine should still run not to badly. Part of the problem is with the graphics card only being DxD10. Win7 really likes Dxd11.

I would check for any "conflicts" in the Device Manager and try reducing the number of programs running in the background.

Possibly a bad install. You had the UAC slider set to it lowest position and were logged in with Admin privileges. Depending on software, if you had a Anti-Virus software, it may need to be disabled for the install of IV.

I don't have any short fix for your particular problem.

But I recently restored an old slow 32-bit Vista (64-bit processor, so this box came out about the time of change-over from 32-bit to 63-bit) machine back to it's original OOTB set-up with only Windows Updates added and it now runs like new.  It was a two day job to get back to OOTB and update Windows and reinstall Inventor.

So the nvidia FX3500 only has 256MB onboard RAM - that's minimum spec' for Inventor 2013 and 2014.

According to the graphics log file you posted, there have been problems since May initialising DirectX 11.  It then reverts to DirectX10 - which also fails, so it reverts to DirectX 9.  It's been doing that alomst daily since May - although I think you gave up working during June... The problem starts again on July 3.

Your drivers are somewhat out of date - you are running 258.95 - and the current version is 307.45  (I'm not advocating using the 'lates' drivers - this is just a suggestion to fix whatever is broken with the current version.)

You can check which version of DirectX is acrtually installed on your computer by going to the Start menu and typing in dxdiag into the little window at the bottom of the menu.  Run the diagnostic tool and it should tell you at the bottom of the first page the version of DirectX that is currently running.  There arre some tests you can run - something there might give you a clue as to the cause of the problem.

According to the nvidia drivers website, your card does support DirectX 11 with the latest driver installed.

Try the diagnostic tool - if nothing else it might give you the satisfaction of finding out what's wrong.  Then fix it.

Latest Nvidia drivers are here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-tesla-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-307.45-whql-driver.html

How to use dxdiag: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows7/products/features/directx-11

My final tip:  Go buy a decent graphics card.  Seriously - if you're using that thing all day and it's been running like a three-leg dog since May, the cost to whoever pays your wage is far higher than a new graphics card.  And please, DON'T buy mimimum spec' again 😉

Sorry I'm taking so long. I had important stuff to do last week at 1/100 of the normal speed. Nothing I did Friday helped. Yesterday I updated the drivers again, and that seemed to help even though the diagnostic in the Application Options indicates the same problem.
