Inventor 2009/2010 with Windows 7

Is Windows 7 with Inventor 2009 or 2010 a success or failure?

since MS Win 7 hasn't been officially released, I guess it's a failure
since hardly anybody is attempting to run Inventor on 7?

I have been on Win 7 (Beta, RC) for a few months. I would never ever go back to XP and I never had Vista on this machine.

Been running IV 2010 Pro with ADMS from day one.

It works fine, except for a few little quirks.

W7 is very quick.

Lots of productivity improvements that make it a pleasure to use.

Today MS will make the RTM available for MSDN / Technet subscribers. I.e. Autodesk will have a copy as well.

I too am running a RC of Win 7. (Our IT here refused to go Vista, and I needed the ram addressing...long story)

I have the issue of IV 2010 not being able to open Excel.

I need to edit big iAssemblies/iParts with excel. For now the work around is gonna be hopping on a co-worker's XP machine. I'm gonna have my best IT guy here look into it for a quick fix, but I doubt much can be done.

Otherwise, Windows 7 is F'n awesome!!!!

Hardly any crashes in Inventor!!! (Like only when doing crazy stuff in sheetmetal)

Win 7 is SOooooo fast on start up, I'm gonna shred all my Vista installs at home and go Win 7!

@thomas.rambach,
Thanks for your interest in seeing Inventor running on new OS, there's no official announcement of Windows 7 support in any version of Inventor till now, while we haven't seen big issues with running Inventor/ADMS on Windows 7 so far, please let us know if you run into any problems.

@paulwells7090,
Thank you for reporting the opening Excel issue on Windows 7, I've logged this issue and we'll have engineer look at it.

Thanks,
Chao

Ok, recently i tried Windows 7 Ultimate(MSDN Final Release) 32 bit & 64 bit.....

I found that Autodesk Inventor 2010 with SP 1 has the best Performance, launches faster than any previous versions of Windows's.... ..Windows 64 bit is recommended now by Microsoft because it can use more than 3 GB of Ram. I tried to carry out some FEA,it was amazing, faster than before,but......

the big problem is Tooling Suite...

it hangs when you do some analysis on find gates and fill analysis,

I recommend Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with Autodesk Inventor 2010 with SP1,if you will not use tooling Suite

I've had no problems with Win 7 opening Excel, but did with Vista. With Vista you needed to change the file type in the ‘Open' dialog box from Excel to ‘All files'. I agree that Win 7 is far and away better than XP or Vista...

I am using Inventor 2010 in Windows 7 Pro x64. I too have the same issue with Inventor not being able to open up Excel to edit iParts or iAssemblies. Inventor does act like Excel does open (the right click menu is like it would be if you were editing the spreadsheet within Excel) and you have to press Esc in order to get back to the modeling space.

One other issue that I've seen in both Vista and Win7 64-bit versions....After opening an undermined number (but at least over 20) drawings and checking them into Vault, Inventor hangs on the DWF creation. Unless you close out of Inventor after opening about 20 drawings or so (one at a time or all at once, doesn't matter) this issue will occur. Don't know if this is a huge memory leak or just they way Inventor works with the DWF creation. I do know that with the 32-bit versions that you can see the memory being used up and if you go long enough in the 32-bit version, Inventor will crash, not hang like in the 64-bit versions.

Other than these two issues (so far), Inventor 2010 seems very stable within the Windows 7 environment, also Inventor seems to run faster in Windows 7 than in XP. Windows 7 is right on par with performance when comparing it with XP. Win7 actually boots up faster and shuts down faster than my XP machine. I was one of the few that actually liked Vista, but after experiencing Win7 here at work, I can't wait to buy it for my home computers.

Jsmith923,

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

Hi Ehsancad...

Is good to know that you finally got your hands in the final copy of W7.

I was having an issue with W7 RC1 x64 with Inventor 2010 (not SP1) and MS-Office 2007; when I create whatever new part and try to link the parameters to an spreadsheet i would get the message that the module was not installed and will not create the link. Thinking that it will be an x64 problem I tried doing the same thing in a Vista x64 machine and it worked just fine. Unfortunately because of that we had to move back to our old xp64. I was wondering if Autodesk was going to take a look at this problem and fix it hopefully before the official release is out, is there a chance you can try that in your machine and see if the problem went away? We were very happy with the performance of W7 and we really want to upgrade as soon as the product is out. Thank you in advance!!

I've followed that link but I am still having difficulties installing Autodesk. I am a student at college so I downloaded the "free" program through that. Should that matter on whether or not I'm having problems?

I tried logging in as an Administrator, turned off the UAC, turned off my virus scanner (McAfee), and changed the compatibility to XP Service Pack 2 (I've also tried 3). I also right clicked and said "Run As Administrator" and it still doesn't work.

So I'm wondering if maybe I'm clicking the wrong thing. I downloaded the file then found that it is located: C:/Autodesk/Inventor_2010_SV/x86 . I haven't seen this anywhere online but I'm assuming it's right because that's what downloaded. From there, there is a "Setup" application and a "Setup" configuration (which is just a text file). For some reason it doesn't show whether or not the first Setup is a .exe but I'm assuming it is. As such, I've made my compatibility changes there.

When I double click this (or Run As Administrator), a window pops up with two options along the side: "Install Products" (Perform a standard installation on this workstation) and "Read The Documentation" (Read and print the Readme, Installation Guide, and other important documentation). When I click "Install Products" it says I cannot run it on my current operating system.

I've tried everything I've read online and this still isn't working. Am I applying the compatibility settings to the wrong file? If anyone else can offer help, it would be greatly appreciated!

Let's back up here a second. Why are you trying to run in XP2 or 3 mode or any compatibility mode at all?

Sounds like you are on the right track. Turn off UAC. Turn off your antivirus. You may want to run windows update before trying to install as well.

When you tried to install did you get any error messages? Did it say it completed?

There should be no reason that you have try to run this in compatability mode of any kind.
