installation/authorization

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help with this.

We got Inventor 7 and have installed it an been using it. Inventor is authorized over the network and have been having no troubles.

However, Mech Desktop still keeps on asking for an authorization code, which our dealer can't give us. They said we should be able to setup Mech Desktop to authorize through the server as well.

How do we tell Mech desktop to authorize through the server instead of typing in a code. Do we reinstall it a certain way or what?

You will be my new hero if you can solve this for us. Surely many other people authorize through the server and don't have our problems.

THANKS,

Justin Byers

AIS6 had some issues with what order you installed things in. Assuming that was resolved in AIS7, do you have a proper licpath.lic in the MDT directory? Did you install MDT from an image on your license server? Do you have conflicting acadserver environment variables setup on your PCs?

i don't think the order issues were resolved. I first installed Inventor first, then Mech desktop. Then, I was told by the dealer that it should be the reverse. I tried the correct order on a fresh computer, but still the same thing.

Inventor is so easy, they ask you if you want to authorize via a server or code. Why can't Mech desktop be the same?

You can't install MDT direct from the CD as a
network licensed version. Installing it from the CD will give you a "node
locked" version which requires an auth code.

To install it properly :-

Insert disc 2 and When the autorun menu appears,
select "Network Deployment"

From this menu you need to use step 3 (Network
installation wizard)

Please note that this should be done on the server.
This will create what is called a "Client deployment" which is basically an
image of the install CD.

From each workstation, you connect to the server
and run the .exe that the deployment created. This will install MDT on the local
workstation with the difference being that the installed software will look to
the network for a license.

Your VAR really should be able to talk you through
this procedure, or failing that there is a pdf on the cd which goes into more
detail.

Hope this is of some use, please ask if you need
any more help

If MDT asks for an auth code, then you have the "standalone" version and not
the "network license" version. The first kind can be used anywhere, like on
a laptop aboard an airplane, while the second kind requires an active
network connection on each launch.

Ask your dealer to explain the differences and the costs to switch from one
to the other. Much more info is available at

Thanks for the info guys. I did run the network installation wizard, and it created the deployment, but I started the deployment on several workstations and it never brought up anything.

I will rerun the network install and see if it can correct the deployment.

Your explanations makes sense.

Thank you

Watch out - When you create the deployment you have
the option of creating it so it runs in "Silent mode"

You don't want this as it will do a silent install,
i.e it won't ask you where you want to install or type of installation etc.. and
looks like it isn't doing anything.

There is a reghack that changes a standalone installation of MDT into a
networked, and vice versa.
HKLM/software/autodesk/autocad/R16/acad-203:407/adlm, change type from 2a
(standalon) to 19 (network)
This works for MDT only, not for IV.
Dealing with the registry at own risk!
