You can't do it in the same way as an assembly, but it can be done.  You can use the Derive command to bring the solid body of one part into another part (derive it as a separate solid body).  Then you will have to use the Move Body command to move and rotate it into the desired location.

Hi pgcust,

Another way to do this is to:

  • create a "throw away" assembly file
  • drop your multi-body part into this assembly
  • then place your other part and constrain it to the multi-body part
  • then edit the multi-body part in place (meaning edit it from within the assembly)
  • then go to the Modify tab > Copy Object button, and copy the other part as a solid body.
  • you can then discard the assembly file, as it is no longer needed.

This allows you to position the part first, but doesn't create a derived link. So if you need that live link cwhetten's Derived approach might be the better way to go, if not the Copy Object method will likely work best.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
