iAssembly Color Override

IV2010, Vault - We are using a lot of iParts and iAssemblies, and are running into an issue with color overrides.  iParts are no problem, of course, because we can set a column in the table as a Display style column and it functions perfectly for each generated member.  However, that is not available in iAssemblies.

For instance, if we have piece parts that get painted - no problem.  But, we also have weldments that require piece part subcomponents that are not painted until AFTER welding, so they stay raw (no color overrides) until generating the iAssembly weldment members.  Our current workaround is to activate the factory member we want in a certain color, manually click/select each component in the assembly, choose the color override from the drop-down list, save the factory, then manually click/select each member of that color from the table list, right-click and generate files.  Then, repeat for each group of each color.

This does a good job of generating the members in the correct display colors initially, but causes problems later on when placing/using these subassemblies in higher-level assemblies or drawings.  Any time Inventor needs to update or change the file relationships and edit a referenced file, it throws up all kinds of error or notice messages about removing associativity, failed to save the file, design view is set in a previous version, etc.  Everything works very smoothly (even with everything running from Vault), except for the specific assemblies where we set the color override manually like this.

Is there a way to do this more effectively?  Something like, creating Design View Reps in the subassemblies that can then be called up in the iAssembly table for the higher-level iAssemblies?

We're not going to set each individual component up with color and bring it into our weldments, as that will be a logistical nightmare.  There should be a way to easily set the overall color for an assembly.

Any suggestions?

bump.

In Inventor 2014 and Vault 2014 Professional this is still an issue as it seems.

Best regards

You must apply the color at the part level and use those in your weldments,etc..

There is no good method to apply paint directly at the assembly level.
