i edit one part and all occurrences are modified.i only want to edit one

i have steel channel as supports for my piping on a machine. when i placed the channel, instead of placeing a new peice every time. the peices that were the exact same size i just copied and pasted. now i need to place holes in the channel for the u-bolts but on one of the peices the holes are in onle place and in another place on another peice of channel. how do i edit the channels indivually? right now when i edit one all of them take on the modification. i do not know how to make this stop happening without just placeing new channel for each one.

Help please

Hi chelsearau,

It sounds like you'll want to open the channel part file, and use the Save As option to create a new file. Once you specify the new file name and then save the new file, Inventor will likely prompt you to tell you that the old file is still open for editing. You can then close both files if needed.

Then return to the assembly and use the Replace tool to trade out the occurrence of the original file with the new file. Once the new file is placed in your assembly, you can then edit it in context to modify it as needed.

You might also want to look into the Frame Generator tool for this kind of work in the future:

I hope this helps.

so i have to save these all individually? there isnt a quick feature that will break them apart for me?

i have used the frame generator for the skid but the supports are vertical and i have not mastered that yet so i was just placing and constraining the channel

and thank you

Hi chelsearau,

Another option that I didn't think of earlier, is to create the holes in the channels at the assembly level. Assembly level features existing only in the assembly and do not impact the components at the part level.

Assembly level features are intended to be used when a stock part is modified on a per each basis. Keep in mind that this means that when you go to detail the hole features in the drawings you will need to do this by referring to the assembly file, since this is where the hole features reside.

I hope this helps.

Hi chelsearau,

You might also look into the Save and Replace Component tool:
