How to Orient an assembly to an axis????????

Hey gang, This one's got me stumped...maybe I'm overlooking something obvious or overestimating IV. I have an assembly with about 30 parts. I wanted to make a drawing of the assembly, but when I call up one of the standard orthogonal views, the view is skewed, not orthogonal. I went back to the assy file and sure enough, when I "look at" any orthogonal face of any assembly feature, the axis indicator is skewed off about 15 degrees...how in hell did I do that? I can't seem to find a way to align my assembly with the "world coordinate frame"...any ideas?????

Was the assembly aligned to the assembly coordinate
system and then skewed or was it always skewed?  Either the first component
you placed was not aligned or you used "rotate component" (which unfortunatly
works on grounded components).  When you dump in your first part IV
automaticaly tries to align it's coordinate system with the WCS and grounds
it.

First off, unground any grounded parts.
Changing the orientation of the components is simple using constraints between
the axis of one of the components and the axis of the assembly.  You can
select them by expanding the "origin" in the part tree, selecting an
axis and appling a mate constraint with some feature in the part.
Best bet is to play around with this in a simpler assembly till you're
comfortable with it.  Once you get the idea it's pretty
straightforward.

Geez, how silly of me...of course! Sometimes the obvious obfuscates the objective...

Thanks for reopening my eyes. I'm not a good enough user to be arrogant enough to blame ADSK 😕

Remember you can use the change view orientation icon to use any view you want in a idw.

The Wha...??? Where is that...I can't seem to find it! I am on IV5.3 right now, is that only available/new in IV6?

When placing a view, next to the column that lists
the views (front, back, left etc..) there is a button.  Click it and you
can set the custom view.  Read the Inventor help on this subject for
further info.

Sean,

I see the button, but it is ghosted out. I couldn't find anything about it in the IV help file either. What do I have, a stripped-down version?

You can't change it after the view is placed.
You only have access on the placement of a new view.

Sheesh, never mind...it doesn't come alive until you select a file...now I get the picture, so to speak. Although, Patrick's response worked just fine for me, and allows you to select the simple front, back, etc. views from the list.

Speaking of which, what is the drop-down list in the file selection area for? It never contains anything, and I have to keep re-selecting the file I want. If that's normal, so be it but I'd like to see a "recently used" file in that list. Man oh man, I've so much to learn...but I'm loving this IV thang more and more. Thanks again for all the help.

It lists all files you currently have open that
could be used to make a view...
