How to find the gravity center of an assembly

Dear All,

I have a quite complicated assmebly and I would like to know the gravity center. Is there a way to do it in inventor. I also do not know how to assign density of a part.

Thanks

Jihuadu,

You can specify the density of each part by selecting the appropriate material for the part, or by creating a new material. Material selection is done within the part file (.ipt) by selecting format and then materials.

The centre of gravity will be displayed in the iProperties list under the File menu. It shows up as an x,y,z reference point relative to the origin of the assembly.

Hope this helps

jihuadu

Here's a very useful addin that places a marker part at the assembly origin.

http://inventorparts.com/iCode/Cog_Plus_Full.zip

It also has a reference part so you can tell how the centre of gravity moves
etc

I didn't find that useful as I couldn't measure to it. Or can you do that?

Jihuadu never mentioned measuring to it in his original post 🙂

AFAIK, you can't measure to it, so you'll have to use the iProperties method
to create a grounded workpoint or similar.

You can get the coordinates of the COG from the display. Turn on the COG icon, switch to Feature select and then hover over the icon. You will then get a little box that gives you the coordinates releative to the origin (you may have to "select other" to get to it).
