house design with Inventor

Has anyone designed a house using inventor to the point of producing detailed construction drawings?

I am thinking of designing a 50's-60's era 1000 square foot house for my wife and I to build, and want to create a modular construction that can be manufactured per sub-assemblies and snapped together on site. I am picturing the use of wood and structural steel together to make it possible.

My experience is primarily machine design and build, but that architectural stuff doesn't look too hard. (Maybe I will have to re-read The Fountainhead to brush up.)

Any links to solid model home parts (windows, doors, etc.) would be appreciated.

I don't see why you couldn't.

I did a fire station once for my father (architect) that I rendered. It was only the outside of the buliding though (didn't model up the stud walls,etc..)..Looked pretty neat. I can't seem to find it though (it was about 4 years ago). I think it was all on my old home computer that the hard drive crashed.

the 50's designs bar none were the best in architecture and interior
elements ever!...IMHO 🙂 please show us some pictures when you get into it.

Frame Gen should be able to do all the truss's. You will have to add custom
items for the wood. Since a 2 x 4 is really around 1 5/8 x 3 5/8. I don't
know if I would go to all the trouble to model each stud. You are probably
more interested in the corner details and modular panel joints with outside
plywood sheeting.

The tricky thing with flat roofs is the heavy snow load in Milwaukee. Membrane roofs tend to get expensive, so a shallow pitch is probably going to be required.

I will submit designs for approval by the IV discussion group prior to build.

If you are planning to obtain a building permit, you might check with your
local building department on what they will except as construction drawings.

the minimum requirement for planning permission over here is as follows:(architectural plans)
a site plan showing site boundaries and the house
each floor plan plus roof plan
four elevations ie front back and both sides
one typical section through the house showing structure
then there is the min. structural engineering req. ie foundations, roof structure, floor structure if wood, wall structure.

the best is to actually ask the local authority what they actually want.
over here a registered professional architect has to sign the drawings and a PE has to sign any structural stuff.

Anthony,
I have designed a whole house (250 m²). Wooden frame with timber cladding.
Every thing designed down to the smalles things. Only "structural nuts and
bolts" shown - no nails 🙂
I even made the corrugated steel plates for the roof. Great fun to do.
Good luck

Finnur, would you care to share an image of your work? Some of us would like

I am just starting a house design using inventor 8,
I will share the complete design with anyone who is interested in seeing it.
Can anyone advise where I can get a database of standard part models. Are revit models compatible with inventor? Can they be translated?

if you can get the model in dwg format, or step or acis/sat you can pull it into Inventor.

There are parts at:
www.cbliss.com (mostly mechanical, but may be something you can use.)
www.b2-design.biz/tuts.html (click on the Inventor Studio Resources
link) - there's a few items that might be of use.
