Help in 3dsmax rendering...please.

Newbie to both IV and 3ds....

When I save a sketch as an igs file and import it into 3ds max for rendering, 3ds max recognizes what has been imported as one object. And as one object, I can only get it to accept one material.

How do you separate the sketch into its component objects when saved in igs format? Is this done through IV or 3ds? The objective is to be able to render the components with different materials.

Thanks for any help.

What version of Inv. & 3ds?

Do you mean, saving an assembly (IAM) to iges? When exporting
the IGES, save it as a solid, it will then come in as separate
objects.

Did you know that there's a plug-in included with Inventor to
import  files directly into 3ds?

Hi Mike,
I'm using IV7 and 3ds5.

I seem to be missing the Inventor 3dsmax plugin. It's not included in the list in IV's Plugin Manager. Did this plugin come with the original installation disks or was this downloaded separately?

Thanks.

It comes with Inventor, set your max Plug-Ins path to look in
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 7\Bin\

Hi Mike,
Found the InventorImport.dli and InventorUtility.dlu files in the bin of IV7 and copied them to 3ds5 plugins folder. Unfortunately, both failed to initialize.

Recall having read, somewhere in this DG, that the latest available IV plugins for 3ds only work for IV6 files. So it seems, I will have to await for newer plugins to make ipt and iam directly importable into 3ds5.

Or am I missing something again?

Thanks.

Inventor requires the dlu,s to be in the
Inventor Bin Folder. This is because the Dlu's are links to Max Only and all
interpretations are done by the Inventor Kernal back to Max via the
dlu.

2 ways to set it up... In the Max Plugin.ini
file (located in the Max root Folder) you need to add another line pointing to
the bin folder. or.. There is a file called "LoadInventorImporter.ms" in the
Inventor Bin folder. Copy this file to your \Scripts\Startup folder in the
Max5 folders.

The latter is easier

Hi Colin,

I've FINALLY got to import an iam file of IV7 directly into 3ds5...all thanks to your help.

I am really amazed at how you experts dig up all these info from the materials (or lack of it) out of Adesk/Discreet. They certainly are not helping me go up the learning curve any faster.

Thanks again.
