groove weldment (?)

Hi,

I want to weld the following (see pic) pipe to the 2nd part as shown - How I do it?

I'm not familiar with the weldment and when tried to use the groove, It was seemed as I need to define some boundries, as I got this huge groove all over the pipe.

Can someone give some quick assitance on how Do I do it?(I'm not so familiar with the inventor weldments)

Thanks!

Attach your assembly here.

What version of Inventor?

You might need to Split faces.

Hi.Attached is the small assy and its parts.

Version 2012.

I'd be happy to see and learn how to do it!

I had the feeling I'd need something like split faces...(know it from s.w but not in inventor)

Thanks!

By splitting the face of the cylinder (same as in SWx) can make the weld bead whatever size needed.

Can you please show how to split the face? Do you have to do it in the part (pipe) or in the assembly?

Maybe you can attach the assembly?

Thanks again!

Hi! If you don't want to split the faces, you can use Fillet Weld to create the beads. The selection order will dictates which side the bead is created, since the two selection sets are identical.

Thanks!

I tried to to it with fillet but it didn't work. Were you able to do it?

I don't think a groove weld is the appropriate type of weld for this application.  You can easily get what you show in your picture if you use a fillet weld feature (two fillet weld features, actually), and you don't need to split anything.

Unless I am missing something, this should be trivially easy.  Just use the right type of weld.

I'll try it. for some reason when I tried it it didn't work for me. (also started with fillet!)

You might want to start with small radius (distance). Maybe the value you entered initially was too big for the selected faces.

Thanks!

Ah yes, the fillet weld works as well.

To answer the question about Split face - you do it at the part level with either a sketch line or with a workplane.

Now I did something with the fillet bead, but it's doing that on only one side of the cylinder - how did you mange to create it on both sides?

What size did you use?
What side did it work?

Because one of the faces is a cylinder it is very sensitive to location and order of face picks.

I was able to do both sides without splitting the part face, but it might be worth the time to split the face if changes are likely on this part in the future (if you want it to be robust).

Hi,

There's some mixup in here:-)

1. Can you please show some screen shot on how to perform the split face - this is for the groove bead, correct?

2. I was trying to make it with fillet bead as someone suggested in here, but could do it only on one side of the tube..Is it possible to "catch" both sides? The pic someone put in here's showing both sides..which I couldn't mimick...

My last response WAS with the fillet weld - I'll try to put together an animation.
