Graphics cards and SCSI vs EIDE

Hi all,

Time for a new system.

Got a quote for a system including an Albatron Video card AVGTFX5200 with
nvidia chip, 128 MB. Ever heard of it? is it any good? Is ATI radeon chip
better?

Plus which is better? an ATA133 7200RPM EIDE or SCSI 10,000 RPM? Is SCSI
worth it for Inventor?

Any recommendations are appreciated

Thanks,

Jim Gralinski

Think Albatron was mentioned awhile back but I don't remember what was said.
nVida is pretty much the chipset of choice for Inventor ... or should I
recommend ATI so you will have someone to hate for the rest of your life.

I run 15,000 RPM SCSI drives and speck-wise, they're better than EIDE, but
from what has been said on the group, many folks run EDIE without much
trouble. If the choice is between SCSI and more RAM, I'd go with more RAM
without a extra thought. Of course, if you don't have to make that choice
I'd go with both! XP will address 3 Gb of RAM, so that's what I would
shoot for.

You might want to search the web-based group on ATI, Quadro, SCSI, RAM,
Configuration, Spec, System, stuff like that to get a very good idea of the
experience of long-time users.

I had a quote on this system to run Inventor.

Intel P-IV 1.8Ghz system

Systems includes:
512 MB DDR-333 Kingmax RAM
GeForce 4 MX440SE 64 MB Video card
40 GB 7200 Hard drive.

I know I should up the ram to 1 gig and the HD to 80 meg.

Any other changes I should make and questions I should ask the salesman about the system.

I'm not sure about the Albatron card but since it's a nVidia chipset I'd guess that it would work ok. Stay away from ATI cards, especially the Radeons.

I would start out with the EIDE HD and after configuring your system bump it up to SCSI if the budget still allows.

The faster speed of the SCSI helps out a lot if you set up a large page file
set up. I think the SCSI drive also makes things more stable. I'd go for RAM
over processor speed (to a point) and a smaller SCSI over a larger EIDE.

Western Digital now has a 10,000RPM SATA drive.

I would imagine two of these with a SATA raid setup would be quite fast

Thanks for all the responses.

After I posted I realized that my pc guy told me, over the weekend, a new
standard is out for EIDE drives, the serial ATA. He tried to sell me on a
motherboard for it but said he could not get me a serial ATA hard drive now.
They are hard to find. I will ask him about Western Digital. A book I read
said to stay away from them however.

Sounds like the ATI chipset is out.

Is it worth more $ for a graphics card if it has DDR ram?
