Graphics Card Recommendations

Can I gather some thoughts on the best graphics card choice I should make? Many of you have ideas about which ones would be best based on your own experiences...I don't have too much to spend, but maybe in the 300 dollar range.

I have seen many comments to stay away from ATI. Any positive thoughts out there? Thanks!

Do a search in this NG. Plenty of threads on the topic can be found. In a nutshell look for anything with the nVidia chipset in your price range.

I'm pretty happy with my PNY Verto Ti 4200 AGP 8X
128MB card.  It lists at around $250.  There are other cards in the
same price range based on the Nvidia 4200 chip that are also getting nice
reviews.

I just got a VGA adaptor for the DVI output, and
plugged in a second monitor.  Man, I love it!  I'll never have just
one monitor again.

Wow, that's excellent....so what do you do with the two monitors? Do you spread the graphics over both of them? Or do you use one primarily for your browser, menus, etc

Walt, do you have any comments on the 8X AGP? Does your MB support it? Was wondering if you see any improvements over the 4X AGP.

The second monitor is where my E-mail in-box,
newsreader, and any explorer windows I want open sit.  It's also where I've
trained most of the little pop-up windows (print dialogs, virus scanner
notifications, etc) to go.  It's off to the left, and anything I want to
park for a while I stick over there.  Inventor generally gets my first
monitor.  If I have to open another big app, I can have one up on each
monitor, and jump back and forth painlessly.  Sure, it's just a
convenience, but so is the wheel button on your mouse......

Windows XP and the nVidia drivers for my card made
the install easy.  I hooked the 2nd monitor up and turned the box
on and the system detected it, and ran a wizard that walked me through the
process.
Even if your second monitor is a
cheesy 15" unit you scrounge somewhere, I'd say it's worth doing if your
video card supports it.  The DVI to VGA adaptor was $15 at
Fry's.

Now all I need is a pair of Sony Flat-screen 21
inch monitors <G>

I'm not even sure whether that's doing me any good
or not.  I needed a video card that would work in a hurry, and I bought the
best one I could afford and find.  I felt safe with a card based on
nVidia's 4200 chip.  When the dust settles around here a bit I'll research
it all.

If you're not worried about buying local, check out
Pricewatch.com.  PNY Quadro4 550/580 can be found between $250 - $275, the
Quadro 700 starting at $325.

I have a Sony 18.1 Flat Panel and DVI to DVI
capability but the monitor only came with a DVI to VGA cable and evidently no
DVI/DVI cable was available; even Sony couldn't or didn't come up with one for
me. Been awhile since I've been to Fry's, you happen to know if they have
DVI/DVI cables yet? Thanks!

I think I saw them there.  I did
look through the cables a bit, and did see some with DVI ends on them.
They had all kinds of gender-changers.  It's worth a check, anyway; Fry's
is always a fun kind of zoo to visit.

I just purchased a Albatron TI4800 SE 8xagp to run
on the new system I am in process of building.  I paid 225.00 shipped from

href="http://www.nutrend.com/app/search.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=48&manufactory=1665">http://...

I will be running this on a 8x agp MOB

I have also noticed that the FX 128mb VC will be
out soon (game version)  I think its a FX5600 and will hit the market
around 400.  From what I have read they are HOT and require massive
cooling.

Good luck
