Graphic Card Blues

Mybe this thread has been here before, I haven't seen it:
First: Should I switch from W2k to XP? I hope that on doing this I will get rid of all the crashes I get now. Any one did it?
Second: I try to install a new GeForce3 PNY card and I get a message about "Invalid data" while installing the driver.
Anyone experienced something like this before?
The system I'm talking about is Intel P4, 2Ghz, 1GB Ram, Leadtek Winfast Titanium 64MB GC.
Regards, Val

I don't think going from Win2k to WinXP will solve your crashes. First try a fresh install of your Win2k.

I don't know about your video driver problem. Have you tried downloading and installing a different driver?

I just made the change to xp and regret it. Its
just more of a resource hog that 2k.

I have more trouble with xp (like explorer.exe
taking up a whole cpu until i kill the process) than I ever had with
win2k.

If you have having trouble, maybe a reinstall of 2k
would help.

As for that driver issue, I have never seen that
before. What version are you trying to install?

I'll contradict Matts statement about WinXP. I upgraded from Win2k to WinXP Pro almost a year ago now and have no problems.

AMD XP 2000+
512MB PC2700 RAM
Soyo Dragon Ultra MB
GF4 MX 420
WinXP Pro

I concur with MechMan; I've been using XP Pro now for almost a year and a half. I've had no problems outside of the norm for Microsoft, and I've actually had LESS problems than when I was using Win2000.

I agree. I run 2K at work and XP at home and find I prefer XP.

most of my problems come into play when im working
with video files. xp likes to read any media file you select and get info on it.
more times than not, it makes exporer.exe take up a whole cpu on my box.

just annoying, but it i didnt have those problems
in win2k.

i should also mention that my cpu's are
<1ghz  😞

maybe when i upgrade it will run a little
smoother.

Go into the Options of Media Player and you should find some settings that you can turn off to stop MP from searching the net automatically. Another option is to use a different media player, although I don't have one to recommend.

its not media player. its exporer that does
it

select a media file and look in the status bar ( if
its turned on) and it tries to show the info on the file.

im still trying to find a way to make it not do
that. and then maybe id like xp 🙂

Not seeing it on this Win2k system. In Windows Explorer I click on an AVI file (not launching it) and all my Explorer status bar (bottom of window) says is "1 object(s) selected". Are you talking about the Web View area of Explorer?

You can disassociate your media file types in the
folder options tab of the explorer.  This may help.  Also select
"classic view"

Ah, forgot that you're not the original poster of this thread with the Win2k problems. I'll take at look at my WinXP system later.

I'd recommend Winamp; it'll do just about everything that WMP does. I prefer v3.0, but their 2.x releases (which they still keep up to date) are tried-and-true; the 3.0 versions have a few bugs still in them.

Well Matt, I don't see anything slow about the explorer status bar on my WinXP Pro system. When I click on a video file my status bar instantly tells me video type, modified date, and file size. Is this what your status bar says or am I on the wrong page?

Boy, I was so glad I got 16 replies to my questions! To bad 90% of them went to Media player (?).
Anyway, I've tryied the original driver delivered with the card, all the NVidia drivers I was able to download, including Detonator 42.30, nothing works. I've tryed to install an ElsaGloria2, the same thing: after it looks to all the files, the systems spits the verdict: invalid data.
I've even upgraded my chipset drivers, S.O.S!
Maybe reinstalling W2K will help.
