Good on but not able to reproduce

On only on machine if you do a save copy as lets say take 123.ipt save as 234.ipt. Go find 234.ipt open, the browser name is 123.ipt and the name of the open file at the top is 123.ipt open properties > project part name is 234. So what then if even a simple save as don't work. This is the work around open 234.ipt in the browser rename file that says its a 123 change to 234 save, close, open its fine. That (edited) if a simple save as don't work.

jml,

I believe what is happening is you are manually editing the name of
the part in the browser and then performing the saveas. If I were to
create part1 from scratch and do a saveas to part2 and then open
part2, the browser field name is changed by the software to reflect
the new .ipt name. It appears that when the user alters this browser
part field name, Inventor does not override the part name when the
part is saveas'd. This isn't a fault of the software persee; Afterall,
what if you didn't wan't the browser name altered, just the part name?

I believe a similiar behaviour happens when you do a 'replace
component' the browser name is unchanged after the part is switched.

YOU ALL THINK I ONLY BEEN DOING INVENTOR FOR 1 HOUR IF IT WAS A ONE TIME THING I WOULD NOT POST IT BUT HE STILL HAS THE THING NOT WORKING LSADMBYFGVQWENUKI

I'M NOT SHOUTING.

Look, re-read my reply post. You must be editing the field at least
one time then doing a saveas. I'm not saying you're editing it
everytime you do a saveas- or even the second generation after that,
but at least once in this file's history that field has been manually
edited. What I'm saying is that once that happens- even one time- if
you're using this part file as a template then the field will never
update automatically again.

i tried the same steps on one of my parts with no problem, I then went to CF and downloaded jiml's part. I have the same problem he is talking about. Also it is saved as JIM but it shows up as a different name in the browser. As I said earlier I am very new to all this IV stuff so I don't have any idea what is causing it, but if Kent or Sean could explain it a little bit I would appreciate it.

There is something going on with the files.
Just add the files to a assembly and try to rename them in DA.......instant
poof! From DA?
But reset the part number and it does not poof?
Seems that the browser name is set in granite for
eternity......Autodesk?...................

Perhaps crashing 8 times a day corrupted a file 🙂

Sean skipped out on us for a few days, and Kent is reading and learning as he goes. 8^)

To me what Jon said sound like the most reasonable explanation to what you are seeing that
I have heard.

I took a quick look, wondering if using VBA you might be able to get them back in sync so
they stay that way, but wasn't able to see much in the time I had. 8^)

I am sure this has come up before but I don't remember the conclusion, I am
saying Jiml whoever has a valid point if that doesn't sound to
hypocritical...........

I want to say sorry to everyone. Just I'm under the gun to get this out the door and it is not going to happen. Sorry to Hal and all the others I was rude to just getting tired of under the gun and Inventor has done nothing but put me further behind.

I have no doubt something is wrong with the files. My point is that he has IV crash 8 times a day, certainly things could get corrupt under those conditions. I would also venture to say that if you crash 8 times a day it is either:

1) The same repeatible bug again and again. Kind of like how copy paste symbols between drawing files would cause a crash every time in previous releases. If you did that 8 times a day you WOULD get 8 crashes.

2) Corrupt imported data.

3) A lot of legacy data from R1.

4) Hardware or other environment problems. Software other than IV running, OS config problems, network problems, unstable power supply in the building etc.

Yes I agree Rich, the problem with crashing several times is probably the
important thing to sort first.
I was just wondering whether the syndrome with renaming in browser always
has this affect and if its reproducible or a one off well two corrupt
files, the product off crashes.
wonder if there are back up files available?
P.S. had an Excel file go poof on me today and no it has gone forever, open
file ok has size to file but empty graphic inside Excel border? luck I opted
for back up option just minutes before, saved my bacon.

No this part was not near the crash. this was done in the morning. Crashing was like 10:00. now crashing can't be good for Inventor but as the part not in the crash files.

Well ... I can't get it to do that. I did a part like yours 1234XXX then
save as 1234YYY and the browser and filename changed as expected. Put a jpg
in iCF so you can see. Go see ... it's in there!

I understand the frustration. Not a problem on my end.

since this is a legitimate complaint that no one seems to know why it happened or what to do to correct it shouldn't ADESK be taking a look at it, or if they did post what they found so others won't have the same problem?
