I am about to attempt a gauge..what is the ways of placing the red and black increments on the gauge face...would this be done with either extrusion or emboss...how would you add the increments

Cheers

You could use the image you posted as a decal for your model.  Unless of course you require to model the guage numbers and ticks.....

I think it would be easier to create the dial face as an image file and insert is a decal.

Guage with Decal.jpg

Just model the part and you can resize the image to fit.

...might be easier, but I think it would look better modeled.

You can use either extrude or emboss (I would use Extrude).

I would create a short tick and long tick overtop of each other as two features.

I would pattern the short tick feature and long tick feature as needed.

Another option (if you want flush) is Split Face and then color the faces, but this is more work.
A minimal extrusion and pattern is faster.

Another advantage to modeling it would be you could position the needle at any point you wanted.
