file type icons

I updated Inventor earlier this week (2015) and have rebooted several times since then.

When I shut down last night, things looked normal.  When I logged into my computer this morning, my icons are weird.

Whether I'm browsing recent documents, Open, Save As, etc, or even Windows Explorer, all Inventor related files now have the Inventor logo for their icon rather than the icon specific to each file type.

The other CAD computer still shows the standard icons for the file types, although, it has not had any updates this week (to the best of my knowledge).

No other icons seem to have been affected.

What has happened? How can I fix this?

I have seen this happen in nearly every release from time-to-time.

I simply ignore and at some point the proper associations get re-established. (generally in a couple of days of normal use)

I never have figured out exactly what corrects the situation - never let it bother me enough to investigate.

Never had it happen to me that I remember.. Seen posts about it.. Thought all were related to improper installation rights or problems with the user profiles.

I HAVE SEEN this when I used to use FIX-IT Utilities, it is also a know problem with other software from V-com, that's why I stopped using it.

Other reasons may be a damaged registry, Some one may have changed the default associative icon, File view options may have been changed to icon instead of thumb nail

I go back and forth between different versions of Inventor maybe (can't say for sure) including http://beta.autodesk.com , it occurs when I switch to a different version.

Always seems to eventually fix itself within a couple of days.

eveylynne,

I expect that if you were to use the Inventor Reset Utility:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticl...

It would force Inventor to re-register the extensions to the appropriate applications.

Please let us know.

Alas, that utility didn't work.
And it erased the backups I made of my settings.

eveylynne,

Where did you save your backups to?

Eveylynne,

My apologies!

That is one of the locations that is removed:

C:\Users\cad1\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Inventor 2015

If a different person (Admin) logs in, do they appear correctly?

Thanks Bob.
I found a jumpdrive backup of my settings, and imported them after I ran the utility. A few hours later, the icons returned to normal.
(I never did get to log in as admin.)
I tried to post a reply after that, but Chrome kept giving me a 413 error, "Request entity too large." Seems to be finally working now.

And the icons are back to the Inventor logo again.

eveylynne,

Have your file type icons returned?

We are running 2014 and the icons switched to Inventor logo over the weekend on all of our CAD workstations. We are not aware of any updates that occurred.

I ran the utility that Bob suggested (back up your user settings in non-AutoDesk folders!), and rebooted a few times. Nothing happened then, but several hours later, the icons were back to normal.
The next day, they were the IV logo again, and they've been that way ever since.

eveylynne,

Please exit all sessions of Inventor and run:

"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2015\Bin\Inventor.exe" /unregister

Wait about a minute and then run Inventor.

This will force it to re-register with the operating system.

Please send us an update.

Thank you.

This morning I faced same problem when our IT guys installed new Antivirus in our office!

After digging around here is the solution.

You have to get this software and google it (attached): FileTypesMan.exe

If you had any problem regarding changing Icons you can run “FileTypesMan.exe”

And search for any extensions (.ipt) right click on it then “Edit Selected File Type” and change “Default Icon:” to specific file path contains icon shapes.

For inventor file the path is:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2015\Bin\en-US\SrvRes.dll

Woooo!
My icons are back. Thank you. 🙂
It took a reboot for them to show up correctly in IV, but it was pretty much instant in Windows Explorer.

Alas!

Upon boot up this morning, the icons were back to all being the same IV logo..

Mine is working well after changing the path and re starting the windows!

I think you have to look what software is changing your access to the default inventor Icon's path

maybe an antivirus or Microsoft products (adobe acrobat) loading at start up programs( for example try to remove your adobe acrobat check the procedure and install it again).
