FEA program?

Anyone know of a cheap one? I only want to do one or two casting parts
that I would like to check the stress areas. The one that I have been using
is from MDT but it is not a good one and it doesn't do well with fillets and
complex shapes. My boss wanted to do some kind of a real world testing on
the part which will be a pain because I will have to design a testing
machine to see if it will ever crack or wear-out. I need some advice for a
good cheap FEA or someone could help me by having me send you the model and
you do the FEA and send it back so I can show it to him...

Thanks!

I would go ahead and build your machine to test the parts. FEA is not a
replacement for testing the final design - it's only a tool to check the
design of critical areas before you spend money on the tooling. No matter
how good the FEA package is you are going to need to make assumptions about
the material properties in different areas of your part. Depending on what
kind of casting it is you can have porosity, inclusions or metal that does
not cool evenly and will produce internal stresses.

A relatively simple test fixture can demonstrate very quickly if you have
made an error in your assumptions - plus, are you comfortable enough with
your process to guarantee to your boss that there won't be any field
problems based on an FEA analysis. If your boss wants real world testing
you better give it to him or you'll never hear the end of it if something
goes wrong in the field

Couldn't have said it better myself.

That is exactly what we were arguing about. So very well said. My boss read
that so he laughed and pointed fingers at my face. :^P
