Exploded Bills of Material

Hi All

I have a multi level assembly that has about 1500 parts top to bottom with about 35 different levels. I would like to export a BOM from the top level with the subassembly tree expanded the entire way up. What I want to do is give prototype a list of every part number needed and there quantites.

Both the Inventor idw and the Design Assistant limits us to a list of either by parts only or by first level only. Either way you do it subassemblies in level 2 and below are not accounted for. Does anyone have any ideas other than starting at the top level assembly exporting the BOM and going the rest of the way down the tree and finally throwing all items into 1 excel sheet.

Thank You

Unless things have changed in R6, you have 2
options.

The easiest is using Charles Bliss' BomXtractor -
I'm sure you can find it on his icodes page.

Otherwise, expand your browser in assembly mode to
show all the parts you wish to be included in the BOM.  Then highlight them
all - it'll be a slow process - then use Tools/BOM and all the highlighted parts
should show - then you can export.

Mike,

R6 has a new feature in Parts List whereby if
you create a Parts List by 1st level you can expand the
sub-assemblies.

The steps would be to create a view of the main
assembly. Create a Parts List of the view. Edit the Parts List. Expand the
sub-assemblies by selecting the [+] cell. Export the Parts List.

Hope this helps.

In R5.3 it was possible to expand the browser
and then select all the parts that you needed
for your BOM table. But if you are to try this
in R6 it crashes. The only way around this
problem that i have found is to create a new
drafting standard based on the one you are using
and in this standard Create a parts list with
all the information that you require. Now Create
a quick drawing and parts list of your model and
edit the parts list this will allow you to
expand and export the parts list to a spreadsheet

Mike,

I need this functionality for the same reasons as
you.  What Steve wrote about is a nice addition to IV, but it is incomplete
if you have created derived components from assemblies so that you could, for
example, do some machining to a wledment.  The expanded BOM will not show
the parts that make up the weldment.

What I do is export a file to all levels in Design
Assistant.  Then I open it with Excel using "\" as the column
delimeter.  I then selectively delete the extraneous information, like the
network location of the files, and sort the remaining part numbers.  I
usually have many repeat parts in the list, so I then do an advanced filter
keeping unique records only.  I can create a complete list of drawings to
give to prototype in a matter of 3 minutes for a 200-300 part assembly, and
plates in machined weldments are included.
