EDS UG to IV?

Is the press release of Feb 26, 2002 dead or is there a tool in the works?
Any body have any info. I need to get some assemblies into IV from UG and
it's kicking my butt...

I don't think they have a UG<->IV converter yet. Could be wrong.

On a related note:

I sat in on their web conference a few weeks ago. They are working on some
new feature based translators. They said they should have a ProE<->IV
(among others) converter by 1Q2003. That's the holy grail baby!

Coop,

From what I was a couple of months ago, this is still in the works. A release date was unknown. Its one of those "skunk works" projects.

I asked the same at a roadshow of IV6 recently but got no positive answer by
the Adesk poeple there.

EDS and Autodesk Announce Plans for Interoperability in Their Mutual Product
Design Software Architectures

NEW YORK - EDS (NYSE: EDS) and Autodesk Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK) today announced
a preliminary agreement aimed at enabling interoperability between software
applications based on EDS' PLM Solutions Parasolid and Autodesk's
ShapeManager software architectures.

Seamless connectivity between these two platforms will enable customers to
share information between systems, boost productivity and lower costs. The
initiative was announced today at the Daratech SUMMIT 2002 in New York.

The development of a direct link between these two powerful technologies
allows for seamless sharing of design information between ShapeManager-based
Autodesk Inventor, and the numerous Parasolid-based applications, including
Unigraphics and Solid Edge from EDS PLM Solutions.

"'Open by design' is good for the industry, and our customers demand it,"
said Chuck Grindstaff, president PLM Products, EDS PLM Solutions. "By
enabling an open environment, manufacturers can enjoy greater flexibility in
how technology is deployed and it also creates new opportunities for the PLM
solution providers. Autodesk and EDS have many mutual customers, and those
companies in particular will quickly benefit from this initiative."

"The need to move design data up and down the supply chain with high
fidelity is an essential component of our customers' business processes,"
said Robert Kross, vice president of the Manufacturing Division at Autodesk.
"This is especially true in the automotive and aerospace sectors of the
manufacturing industry where we see business opportunity. By enabling this
type of interoperability, our customers will be able to use data from
different systems without employing third party translators, neutral file
formats of other methods. This should vastly improve their results and time
to market."

Guess we wait and see, like everything else, it will be a pleasant surprise
when we get new functionality.

I let the IGES translation run for 2.5 hours, then just gave up, I have
never had a positive experience with IGES, can't figure why anyone would
even output it? Requested STEP to start with and then after I received the
disc with the .igs, guess I need to speak more clearly and slower when
specifying formats. The sales guy gave me the "it works for everybody else
what's your problem talk", I just sat patiently and then asked if I could
speak to someone with some level of technical intelligence, it's amazing how
the tech guy knew I would have problems and knew exactly which format to
send the new files in? S ---- T ---- E ----- P please !!!!!!!

Thanks crew.

Unrelated: Anybody have any experience with Spinfire? I was ask a bunch of
questions about it this weekend and really couldn't contribute anything,
other than the propaganda claims it is the ".pdf" of solid modeling? Can
their files be read in and used to generate code for a CNC machine. A
machinist friend ask, guess he's been bidding work from files supplied in
"Spinfire"?

No, Spinfire is not a translator... only a viewer. MostCAM packages have IGES,
STEP, SAT and Parasolid imports...
