DWG Import Crash on 64bit PC

Well my 64bit PC and Inventor 2008 finally experienced the dwg import crash. I performed the hotfix as directed under TS1071050 but had problems removing tyhe AOEMViewer 2008 as it was never installed during the initial installation process. Installing the component using the hotfix did nothing but install the component. It did not resolve the problem. Every 32bit PC I installed the hotfix on was successful. DWGIN worked on those PCs.

The following is my last update on the CER I initiated with Autodesk for this issue. Sorry, for I hope I'm not the only 64bit PC running XP Pro x64. on a HP xw8400, 6 gigs RAM, FX3500.

UPDATE
After 2 hours of a clean uninstal of all Autodesk products, past and present, and then a reinstall of Inventor Suite 2008 (Inventor, Mech Desktop, ADMS, without Vault); I am again able to import dwgs on my PC.

I have not yet performed the hotfix for the DWGIN issue addressed by TS1071050 as I do not believe that it will repair this issue on a 64bit PC running a 64bit OS.

At no time during the installation of Inventor Suite 2008 does it make any reference to the AOEMViewer 2008 nor does it install this component. Obviously there is something else causing the DWGIN crash on 64bit machines.

I performed 20 installs of Inventor Suite 2008 on 32bit machines and saw that the the AOEMViewer component was installed during the initial installation process.

TS1071050 seems to have successfully addressed the DWGIN issue on 32bit installations. It does not address the issue when performed on a 64bit PC.

The only difference I can see is that Inventor 2008 is installed as a 32bit application (x86) and Mech Desktop 2008 is installed as a 64bit application on 64bit machines.

While I am again able to import dwgs on this 64bit machine, I feel strongly that it will fail again at some point in the future. Please do not close out this CER as nothing has been resolved. Further investigation is called for and a subsequent fix directed to 64bit PCs should be released.

Please advise.
Gary

Oops...my 2nd paragragph should have said: Sorry, for I hope I'm not the only 64bit PC running XP Pro x64. on a HP xw8400, 6 gigs RAM, FX3500 having this issue.

Hi Gary,

At this time MDT DWG import will not work on 64-bit machines. I think when
you tried to import, some files were from MDT and some were not. The ones
from MDT will fail and the ones not from MDT will be okay. Can you verify
this?

As you have already figured out, TS1071050 will not solve this problem on
64-bit machines because AOEM viewer is not installed with Inventor on 64-bit
systems.

What you say is correct. I imported and AutoCAD R14 file with no problem. I then used AutoCAD 2008 to open ans save a copy of the same R14 file in 2007 format. Inventor imported the 2007 AutoCAD file with no problem. I then opened and saved a copy with MDT 2008. The import of the MDT file copy caused the same crash. Just to reverify I then tried the import on the AutoCAD R14 file with no problems.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Now, when are you guys going to give us Inventor users a 64bit application. It seems as though you did it backwards by making MDT/AutoCAD a 64bit application first. Inventor users would have been better served with the 64bit technology than the AutoCAD.
