Drilling thru tubing?

could someone point in the direction of how to drill a hole thru a tube or round stock? I cant find anything in the help sections. In IDEAS you could just create a round object move it into place and use it to cut the hole. NOW that Im using inventor I cant figure it out.

Start from the inside out.

You can't use the hole command directly on a round surface. You need to sketch a point on a plane.

Why doesn't the hole command recognize a work plane?

The attached example shows two different methods. If you need a hole note
for detailing, then you want to go with the hole feature, if not the
extrusion may be a little easier.

You have to pick a plane or face that is parralell with the result you want
befor you select the cylindrical face.

the help files (in inventor 10) show the following:

draw a construction line from the center of the end of the tube or solid
cylinder out to the edge where you would want a work plane to be tangent to
the surface.

finish the sketch, then add a work plane, pointing to the end of the
construction line you just drew on the outer edge/surface of the tube or
cylinder.

this will create a work plane tangent to the tube.

rotate the view to be straight on to this work plane, and start a new sketch
on that workplane, placing your hole centers where you want them along that
tangent line of your tube outer surface.

finish the sketch, add the hole feature as you need, This will put holes
into the tube or cylinder according to the specifications you placed on the
hole create dialogue.

I would post a file, but it is also drawn in inventor 10 so your inventor 9
wouldn;t be able to open it.

Here is another option:
There is no need to create any work planes.

When I first create my tube, I would project the origin "center point" and constrain the circles to that. Then the extrude command would creat the tube. I prefer to extrude in both directions so that the origin X-Y plane is also a center plane.

Next I would start a new sketch on either the origin Y-Z or X-Z plane. I would project the ends of the tube and the Z axis (which is also the center line) to the new sketch. Place my hole centers and dimension as required. If you want the hole through the center place them on the projected Z axis. Close the sketch and pick the hole command, chose "through all", and a direction and it will place the hole through the tube.

If you want it through both sides, you could mirror the hole about the origin plane, or use the extrude command in both directions.

Or you could circular patter around the center axis to place many holes in the tube at the same distance from the end. Message was edited by: Designer_Mike

I know it is not a tubing, but still a cylindrical item.

Here's an IV9 example,

One of the holes I've created with a midplane cut extrusion and the other is
a hole feature
