Downgrade Fee?

Downgrade Fee?

Several years ago I went from Autocad to the Inventor Suite and have been
paying the $1100 or so yearly sub fee. One of my clients was hoping to land
a long term contract for a company that wanted to utilize Inventor so the
timing was good. Autodesk offered me a good deal to go to the Inventor Suite
so I jumped on it although I do not know how to use Inventor. The contract
never came through but I continued with the Suite in hopes that it would and
I would then learn Inventor and be able to justify the expense. It doesn't
look like that is going to happen. I asked my reseller about "downgrading"
back to just plain Autocad which would only be about $400 or so per year
subscription. I was told that "if" Autodesk approved it (IF!!), which they
say is rare, they woud also charge me a one time $450 downgrade fee on top
of the sub fee. Seems like a real ripoff to me. So instead of the $1100 this
year for the subscription I would be paying about $850. Not much of a break.
Has anyone had to deal with this? I think I may just not renew the sub at
all, keep what I have for a few years and see what happens.

Any input or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
CD

I'd learn Inventor unless you only do 2D factory floor layouts and the like.

If you're just going to use AutoCAD, then I think you could drop the subsubscription without much worry. Since you can save files back, and download the DWG true view to save newer version back in the future, it shouldn't be a problem.

Good point miller... and Dennis, I really only do 2D stuff... when I use 3D
it is only for presentations, which I can do in Autocad quite well. All of
my engineering clients and fab shops use standard Autocad, Inventor really
offers no advantage to me at this point that I can see. Love to learn it,
cannot justify the time and expense.

Thanks

Just because you 'downgrade' back to AutoCAD doesn't mean you cannot still learn Inventor ... it just means you cannot receive the upgraded edition each year.

For a complete novice, just following the tutorials within Inventor (and just playing around) will teach you some of the basics -- obviously, if and when, you want to progress into the 3D design world; it is strongly recommended that you take courses on Inventor from your local institution.

That is a very interesting situation. I was in one that is a little similar to yours, but with different software. We even looked at selling our license privately, but the license transfer fee from the software mfg was a little steep. So keep that in mind as well. As far as acad, don't forget that acad Mechanical somes with the suite. We upgraded to inventor suite about a year ago, and at first i wondered why acad Mech. comes with it, after the last couple of weeks of messing around with it, now I know why. I think that all of the content center stuff (dynamic blocks) are very useful, and it is not that hard to create your own and add to the library. So in short acad Mech. is acad just with alot of stuff that you don't have to create. Also, you don't have to work in the acad Mech. enviroment, you can select regular acad, just with the new user interface. I still have to give autodesk credit for at least keeping the basics of acad there, just a new user look.

As I have converted to IV, and it does work for us. But, I still do use the 2d acad side of it, as there are features while creating a drawing that IV does not have yet. The subscription side of it is a coin toss. I work for a company that can afford the yearly cost, but I do think that one could get along without it. I don't know if you have already paid for the subscription, but keep in mind if you have not that it was my understanding that you had one year from the time of purchase of IV suite to purchase the subscription package. ( check with your re-seller though) So that could be an option, if available.

Since you haven't had the time to get started with IV, is there an option to bring on another operator that is familair with IV to keep it up and making the company revenue?? Hope things work out...

Just whacked us for 34 seats of downgrade - you do the math ( :

Oddly, I'm happy to see that they do it to others too ( :

...even so it happened two years ago...

May I ask you to extend your message a bit?

Downgrading seems highly important for us now and I'm not sure that I understand what happend to you.

Were you successful in getting downgrade of 34 setas of some suite (which one?) to 34 seats of some individual product (which one?), right?

Had ADSK take some cost for this?

Our reseller refuses to downgrade suite to individual product.

What arguments you've used.

Thanks in advance!
