Display the minimum distance between two components of an iam file on an idw.

Is there a good way to display the minimum distance between the two components on an idw?

I have a machine with several (12-15) different position reps.  I can measure the minimum distance between any two components in the iam environment with the measure tool.  I can use autolimits to warn me if the distance gets out of bounds. 

I have a separate sheet in the idw for each position rep.  I would like a note or dimension that updates based on the position rep.

For those who know ProE\Creo, I want to make a measurement feature in the assembly and display its results on the drawing.

Presently you will need to add the dimension to each sheet to show the value.

If however the positional Rep of the view changes to another positional rep that dimension will update.

I thought that the dimension tool in an idw was limited to displaying the distance between two edges/lines projected from the 3d model to the 2d view plane. 

Is there a way to measure the 3d distance with the idw dimension tool?  In my case, the view plane is not parallel to the distance that I need to show.
