Dimensioning wish

Dimensioning wish

I often double click IDW dimensions to quickly get to the tolerance dialog
box. It would be really nice to either be able to edit the dim text also in
that box, or have a button called "text" that would automatically open the
text box. The bottom line is that I often need to edit both the dimension
tolerance and text, it would be nice to save a step. I know this is picky,
but the way I see a few little tweaks here and there to the interface can
make a world of improvement to this already great software.

It's not picky at all.
We've been asking for this since R1.
I have my fingers crossed that we'll finally see improvements like this in
either R7 or R8.

I totally agree on this one.

But as Ron Crain said, it has been asked since R1,... why was it not granted
for the past 6 releases (plus SPs) ? Probably not enough people has
requested it in order to be included in the priority list.
If that's the case, is there anybody else who wants this wish sooner?

Boy that sure would be nice, it is one of the most frequent IDW
questions / problems I hear. Hard to believe they haven't done it.

SP's are only for fixing bugs so it's just the six releases I guess, but
overdue none the less.

I've brought it to the newsgroups twice, and always got lots of support for
the idea. I once suggested it directly to a developer, and he seemed to
agree with me that it would be a vast improvement.

How something like this doesn't get done is a mystery.

Seems like a pretty logical request that will reduce user input to get the job
done with less effort.

Isn't this the type of thing that makes a smarter interface that is often
compared to the competitor.

As the interface stands now, fully agree on this improvement. Most simple
single part drawings have around 10 dimensions. At least half of these require
other annotations to complete.

I wish for this option about 350 times per day. I don't understand why they can't look at the way Autocad does things like this. I'm guessing that when Autocad was being developed, it went through the same types of growing pains. Why does Autodesk want to put themselves through the very same growing pains again? And after 6 releases!? Come on, please.

I can echo my total agreement on this issue, as well as having the ability to "name" a dimension within the same dialog box within a model that comes up when you enter a value for it. Right now you have to enter a value, and then go back and assign a name for the dimension.

AMEN! But as to why they didn't incoporate it, well it actually ain't broke... So it isn't a squeaky wheel for greasing

Uh uh uh uh uh ... because this is Inventor, not
AutoCAD, maybe?

AutoCAD has a graphics area also, so maybe we shouldn't have that in Inventor?
Toolbuttons also ..... so get rid of those? Opps it's a Cad program also so lets just get
rid of Inventor 8^) To totally ignore features that work well in other Cad programs
(including AutoCAD) would be a big mistake. I am not saying they have necessarily done
that, but that appears to be what you continually suggest?

I disagree with the idea that just because it is in AutoCAD it is bad for Inventor, just
as much as I disagree with the idea that just because it is in AutoCAD it should be in
Inventor. I think there are things and Ideas that can be taken from AutoCAD and things
that wouldn't work well here.

Of course this is JMO and probably not one shared by many

I sometimes wonder if there is a (beaten in?) tendency in the IV group not make changes that could be described with the phrase "like in AutoCAD". Pride goeth before the beta testing, I guess.

Just a funny thought...I wonder what would happen if the IV design team and the Autocad design team switched jobs for a few months? B-)

That is exactly what I mean Kent. I want them to bring over the things (like dimensioning) that work well in Autocad. And don't tell me it can't be done. They ship on the same CD for crying out loud. Adding a simple "TYP" to the end of a dimension is incredibly tedious when you have to do it alot. Whenever I do it I can't help but think how easy it was in Autocad. You didn't even have to exit the dimension command, you just typed "m" before you placed it. You almost need to have a different dimension style for every conceivable tolerance and every suffix you use. In my case there would be about 4 dozen.
