developmental part naming

developmental part naming

When we work in mechanical desktop, we create new assemblies with the parts
local, and named with temporary names (i.e.. bracket, plate 1, plate 2...
etc. etc.). When we are sure we will use the new assembly, we go through it
and change each part name to official part numbers (i.e.. 1234567), then
externalize the parts and assemblies as necessary. So we end up with the
files having the same name as the part number, not "bracket.dwg" but
"1234567.dwg".

So, Inventor wants you to name each part as created. I understand the
segmented database thing and the reason why it needs each part named right
away (no local or external parts like MDT). My question is, during the
developmental part of an assembly, when you are not sure you will use it in
it's initial configuration, you may have an assembly with parts named
bracket, plate etc. etc.. So when you decide the assembly is excellent and
you want to use it, how do you go about changing the part names to official
names if they are already saved as files on the network or local hard drive?
We have been saving each manufactured part with a unique number per our
company naming convention with desktop, but we can easily change the part
name (number) when a part is local. Maybe a different technique is used
for Inventor?

I briefly looked at Design assistant, which allowed me to update the Part
Number field under the project tab of an individual part, but I couldn't
find anything that lets you change the name of the stored file.

Thanks for your time.

You can do this in DA but IMO it's too tedious. What I do is use the fake
part #s. The close IV. In Explorer I rename the parts and assys to the
correct #s noting what the old name was and what the new name is (either on
a piece of paper or in Excel etc..)

Then open one of the sub assys and you will get the resolve box. Point to
the correct "new" part # for the "old" part in question. Do this for all
the parts then save the assy. Repeat for all sub assys and then for higher
level assys.

To be honest I think it takes about the same amount of time each way but I
despise DA..

Switch to the Manage mode in DA and you can rename.

Letting you change the name of the file is exactly what Design Asst. lets you
do - but you have to enter it from Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the
assy. You will see an extra Manage button.
I was once in a similar Catch-22 - the name of the cad file was the same as the
drawing number, but we couldn't get issued a part/drawing number until we had a
print to turn in. So at some point everything had to be renamed.

Stephen,

If I understand you correctly, you need a way to easily change the name
of components (pats) in an assembly, after it is finished. You can do this
quite easily in Design Assistant. From your desktop; 'start' 'programs'
'inventor 6' 'design assistant'.

You then need to open the assembly (don't have it, or any components
open in Inventor) and click on the manage button. You can them rename any
components you need. Don't forget to click the save button when you are
done.

hope this helps,

kevin

Here's how I would handle this: Create the assembly & parts in a "working"
directory. When you are sure of what you will be using, use Pack-and-Go to move
the assembly and parts to a new "real" directory. This will bring all files used
by the assembly. Then use Design Assistant to change the names of the files.

What you describe will work, it has to since you changed the name of the
stored file. But I looked into DA and I could not figure out how to do the
same thing. I was able to update the part names, but this did not affect
the stored file name.

Thanks.

RMB on action, choose rename, RMB on part name, change name. After all those are
done, save.

I forgot to say, when you are RMBing, you are doing it in the row (<---->) the
part is on. Also, you can change the part name (the one that shows up in the
browser) here at the same time.

Thanks Dave,

I was able to rename the stored part file through DA.

I appreciate the responses.
