DESIGN ASSITANT question ?

Let say I have ABC.iam and ABC.idw (associated with ABC.iam).
Then there are 3 parts: A.ipt, B.ipt, and C.ipt in the ABC.iam
and there are 3 idw files: A.idw, B.idw, C.idw (associated with A.ipt,
B.ipt, C.ipt respectively)
To have a new set of dwg. I use DA
Open DA from ABC.idw, I can copy to a new set:
ABC.idw to ABCnew.idw
ABC.iam to ABCnew.iam
A.ipt to Anew.ipt
B.ipt to Bnew.ipt
C.ipt to Cnew.ipt.
The question is: How to use DA to copy A.idw to Anew.idw (associated with
Anew.ipt) ? IV won't let me because Anew.ipt already exists in the earlier
DA copy.
Any idea how to get this thing done?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Select the part and use the find files section of DA. You can RMB and copy
there too.

I just posted a similiar question under "file resolution problems?". I hope there is a solution to this because it's very confusing to me also.

Chris,

Open ABC.iam in the DA.

Highlight the assembly and all parts in the upper window(drag or CTRL
select), and in the lower window, make sure that IDW is checked and hit
the "find files" button.

Let it crunch.

Now, copy/rename the ABC.iam and the part files.
Then, go into the bottom window and copy/rename all the IDW's.

action button and *all* will be copied in one shot-they have to be
renamed individually>

Once all copies/renames/relocates are done and look right, hit the save
button.

Makes sure you add the paths to the new files to the Project before you
do any of this (unless you are utilizing subfolders)

This causes crashing if there is a sub-assembly of a sub-assembly that contains a link to a an idw. This is not a solution!

Sometimes it is better to work in small
steps.  You could copy the top level assembly and IDW.  Then open the
copy in DA and do one part and drawing at one time, working your way down
through sub assemblies.

yeap that seems to be the ticket. It kept crashing when I did a copy of the assemblies and all of its components. this time I did only the assemblies and it worked.

My method is similar, but reversed from what was mentioned. I use DA to copy/rename new A, B, and C ipts and related idws one at a time to the new location. Lastly, I use DA to copy/rename the ABC.iam and idw to the new location and in the same step I replace ABC.iam's components with the new ones so the ABCnew is created with the new components. No problems with this method as yet.
