Design Assistant part name and number set

Thx 4 replies....in response: 1)Did I rename parts in the browser? Initially I noted that by selecting "replace component" you could browse for a dwg to sub. By opening said ipt, the browser would update to the correct dwg. Under properties, summary showed the update but under
occurrence" it did not update. (2) exiting INV and entering DA it showed a change. (3) Returning to INV, model and file status appeared correct. (4) exiting all and creating a "new" folder to check all out, I copied all necessary ipt and iam's to new folder. (5) the ipt names did not remain intact. I've tried renaming all parts in DA, Explorer or open dialog. (6) When creating a whole new folder, copying all necessary files, renaming "in" Explorer the top level iam, ipj and idv and "then" exiting all to open DA where I then proceed to rename dwgs, the names appear changed and update is successful using the "top" level. Saving and exiting DA completely, I open InV, look at the tree and "model" side of the tree does not show the update.....help????!!!!

Once a part is renamed in the browser, FAIK the process is irreversible. I
would think you could rename the parts again in the browser to have the
correct names in there but I also think if you changed again, the part names
in the browser would have to be changed manually again. Maybe at the end of
the project you could reset the permanent ... well ... hopefully permanent
... names and take the experience as a lesson learned. Sadly, don't think
there's much alternative.

From this post and your previous post I see about three different
issues causing your problems. 1) it sounds like you are not defining
new project files (IPJ) after you have copied the project to a new
location. 2) in an assembly, manually naming a part in the browser will
override the iProperties fields. 3) renaming files in Explorer does not
change the iProperty fields.

I had a hard time following your workflow. If I understand your
'Company Policy' correct, you are required to copy the project to your
local drive, rename and resolve links, and then copy back to the server
in a new project location. If this is correct, I would recommend the
following workflow:

1) Pack&Go the project to your local drive. This will create a new
project file that you can then modify for the new project. With the new
project file active you will not have to disconnect from the network.
2) Rename the top assembly in Explorer. Just because you cannot
'rename' the top assembly in DA, you must 'copy&rename', so you end up
with an extra file that must be deleted later.
3) Open the new top assembly (with the P&G project file active) and
rename the sub-assemblies and parts (remember, you CANNOT have the same
filename in multiple locations) and save your changes (if it is a large
assembly, I will do this part in stages so that if there are problems
there are fewer files affected).
4) Open the top assembly in IV and resolve any issues.
5) Move all the files to the server and change the project file to
reflect the server locations, open the assembly from the modified
project file and resolve any link issues.

At some point you may see that browser names and iProperty fields do not
always match. This goes back to the issue of manual edits of these
fields. As Larry and Richard pointed out previously, you will have to
manually edit these from now on. Check out Sean Dotson's
(www.sdotson.com) iProperties tool, it will help speed up the process.

Hope this helps and is what you were looking for.

Another thing to look out for is: sometimes P&G doesn't get all the files.

Very true, but from the workflow described, there were plenty of cracks
for files to fall through anyway.

Point of note: The names in the Inventor Browser are text strings only
and can be changed without affecting iProperties or file names. There
is a utility on my web site on the iCode page for renaming them in the
browser. I think there are similar applications on other web sites.
