In an assembly, select a part or a couple of parts, right click 'em and
select Demote. The Create In-Place Component dialog appears.
Select an assembly template. Click the upper Browse button. Select
the folder that the new subassembly should be saved in, and enter a filename
WITHOUT THE EXTENSION. Click OK. In the Create In-Place component
dialog, Inventor appends an .ipt extension to the file even though it's an
assembly! If you try to accept it, Inventor displays the error:
Cannot save the document with the specified extension
(it is not the right type). Type a different extension for the document
you want to save, or do not enter an extension.
Hello? I didn't enter the extension, Inventor did.
