Defer update doesn't work properly?

Hello,

I have a question about Defer Update (Inventor 2011).

It works when I'm applying a constraint for example.

But when I delete a part, suddenly it starts updating Smiley Frustrated.

I thought the whole point of using Defer Update, is that the document doesn't update, untill you hit the Update button.

Is there a way around this? Because I've got an assembly with multiple parts which need update.

But I want to delete them before they update (update costs a lot of time). Everytime I delete a part, it starts updating immediately..

Thanks in advance

Can't you just delete all the items at once?
I'm not very familiar with defer updates, but if it wants to update after a delete you can at least try to make it do as little as possible.

There are many ways to select all the items, for instance: holding shift or ctrl and selecting them in the browser.
Or right-clicking on 1 of the items and choosing Selection > Select all occurences.

Hope that helps.

I know and already thougt about that.

But there are multiple patterns which hold these parts that need to be updated.

And as fas as I know, you first need to delete the pattern, and then the part which was patterned.

But thanks for your reply.

Hmm... patterns, yes those would do what you describe...

Not sure if this works, it might also force an update, but what if you suppress the pattern(s) before deleting them?

It will create a LoD if you're not using one already, but you can just switch back to the Master if needed.

I've just tested your suggestion and suppressing the components doesn't trigger an update.

But deleting the pattern will still cause an update Smiley Sad.

Same goes for suppressed parts.

Ah, that's a shame. 😞

Running out of idea's, but maybe you could try demoting the patterns into a random sub-assembly and then deleting that sub-assembly?
(select all the patterns/parts you want to delete, right-click, select Component > Demote.)
Again, i'm not sure if this will trigger an update.
Just trying to help you find a workaround.

Also a nice idea Smiley Happy. I appreciate your help very much.

I agree that the best way is to find a work around.

But still, when demoting, it causes an update Smiley Sad.

So if you can think of more ideas Smiley Wink, it's always worth a shot.

Well, here's one:
Try setting the LoD to "All components suppressed" and then deleting the patterns and parts.

It might cause updates, but, if i'm reasoning right, because everything is suppressed it shouldn't take too long...

It could take a bit for the entire assembly to get unsuppressed when switching back to the master LoD, but i don't think you can get around that if you have a large assembly.

Now that's what I'm talking about Smiley Very Happy.

I think this is easiest workaround at this time.

This will save me a lot of time!!

And, as I use a rule to determine which parts will be deleted, it'll take only very little code to change it for me.

Thank you very much!
