I understand how to apply a decal to a part and have it show in the IDW. What I don't understand is how to do this in the assembly view. Our product may use the same part several times in the same assembly, but the decal is only needed on one instance of the part. If I apply the decal in 'part' mode, it appears on all instances of that part....
If I try to create a sketch in the assembly, insert image is greyed out. I can write text on a sketch in assembly view, but it does not show up in the IDW....
The way we handle this is to model the decal/sticker as a part file and add it to the assembly. We track the decal as a part number in the BOM so it works well for us, and it actually better than adding it as a feature. However, it gets a bit tricky if adding it to a curved surface.
That's actually how my company does it for some stickers, placards, etc... and I think it's the most effective way to ensure that it's included in the BOM and subsequent fabrication.

agree - a sticker/decal is a part and exists on the stock-system, so have
each decal as its own ipt.
The only time I can imagine this being untrue is if it was a
silkscreen/printing directly onto a part - in that instance I'd have each
part as its own ipt (as they would have their own part-number and different
stock-location).
