cut along workplane

Can I set up a workplane in an assembly so that all materials on one side
are cut away?

You want a section view in the assembly file. There is a button fly out for
section views on the assembly panel bar. Click the button and the click the
workplane(s) you want.

There is a 'Section View' tool in the panel bar for cutting assemblies and
looking at 1/4, 1/2, & 3/4 sections where work planes define the cutting
planes.

Yes.. I know about the section view.. but this doesn't actually affect the
assembly? It only gives you the view.. it doesn't actually affect the
assembly. [correct me if I'm wrong]
So what I'm looking for is - a similar effect to what you get if you make a
gap or hole through an assembly.. but, defined by a workplane in which you
simply throw out one side. I've been contemplating if there might be a
workaround to get this effect but so far it's not satisfactory at all. Does
anyone have any ideas on this??

assembly.. but, defined by a workplane in which you
simply throw out one
side. I've been contemplating if there might be a
workaround to get this
effect but so far it's not satisfactory at all. Does

on this??

Oh.. I missed your point.. well, using the cut
feature was the 'work around' I was trying to use. It just seemed quite a hassle
to first create an extruded cut feature. The trouble about doing it this way is
that I need to know the dimensions of the part that is cut beforehand.. but
that's a bit tricky.

I am assembling parts and need to cut off anything
beyond the workplane, but depending on the exact configuration.. the size over
the part being cut varies. I guess I could try to simply make the cut feature
'oversized' but I didn't think it was very elegant.. and figured it should be
quite easy to simply use the workplane for CUT instead of having to define
geometry first.

If your dimensions vary in one direction, you can
always skecth an enormous rectangle on the plane you want and the use the ALL
option for the depth.

 

That will leave you safe no matter how your
assembly changes.
